FSU Seminoles: John Sansone

Every Sunday, NoleNation will take a look back at the week that was around Florida State, recapping the top stories and shedding a little light on a few that might have fallen between the cracks.

1. Reid arrested

FSU's starting corner and top return man was arrested near his hometown of Valdosta on Tuesday, and he now faces three misdemeanor charges, including possession of less than an ounce of marijuana.

Because all charges are misdemeanors, Reid isn't necessarily facing a suspension. On the other hand, he's faced legal troubles in the past -- albeit minor charges that were quickly dismissed -- and was suspended for a game for a violation of team rules, too.

Given his history -- and a somewhat damning police report -- odds are Jimbo Fisher will feel compelled to offer some sort of discipline that involves Reid missing playing time. That, of course, should be stinging punishment for a starter heading into his final season with the Seminoles who, just this spring, offered promises of increased maturity and accountability.

But for Florida State, this might even be a blessing in disguise. Weeks 1 and 2 won't be big tests for the Seminoles, who welcome to Tallahassee Murray State and Savannah State, both FCS schools. If Reid sits, younger corners like Tyler Hunter and Keelin Smith should see more action, and that experience could help down the road.

2. Watch lists

It's that time of year when the awards debates begin anew, and while the preseason watch lists tend to cast a wide net, Florida State has a handful of players who should be in the mix for awards even as the season progresses.

Everett Dawkins and Timmy Jernigan made the watch list for the Outland Trophy, which honors the top interior defensive lineman. Dawkins, a senior, is the most experienced member of the FSU defense, while Jernigan was one of the ACC's top freshman defenders a year ago.

Defensive ends Brandon Jenkins and Bjoern Werner, along with defensive backs Lamarcus Joyner and Xavier Rhodes, were added to the watch list for the Nagurski Trophy that honors the nation's top defensive player. Jenkins, Rhodes and Joyner were also placed on the Bednarik Award watch list. Joyner and Rhodes were also named to the Thorpe Award watch list, honoring the best defensive back.

Not surprisingly, kicker Dustin Hopkins was named on the Lou Groza Award watch list. He was a semifinalist for the award in 2011.

And finally, quarterback EJ Manuel was added to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, given to college football's top player.
