Florida State Seminoles: Mavin Saunders

videoFlorida State played in the first BCS championship game. It could play in the first championship decided by a playoff, too.

Monday, they beat Auburn for the final BCS title. The Noles will go for a second straight title in 2014 and they bring back several key pieces next season, most notably quarterback Jameis Winston. They will suffer some departures from central players, but a loaded recruiting class ranked in the top five should add depth throughout the roster.

Weekend recruiting wrap: ACC

Coaches from around the ACC have been busy visiting both top targets and their commitments.

Clemson is trying to lock down one of its big targets on defense and is fighting to stay in the race for another prospect. Meanwhile, Miami and Florida State have been making sure their commitments feel wanted.

Lorenzo Featherston hosts Clemson

Four-star ESPN 300 defensive end Lorenzo Featherston (Greensboro, N.C./Page) is one of the biggest fish out there -- in terms of uncommitted targets.

Clemson, of course, would like to change his commitment status. Last week, a Tigers assistant visited the lanky defensive end prospect to make sure he knows that he’s a priority in their eyes.

Clemson holds the lead for the nation’s No. 27 overall prospect right now, with Florida and North Carolina on the outside looking in.

Every home weekend has seemingly turned into a big recruiting opportunity for Florida State.

And while a game against middle-of-the-road Syracuse isn’t garnering the same attention as the Miami rivalry, a number of ESPN 300 prospects still found reason to head to the Florida panhandle.

It was a mixed bag as far as the visitors go because some prospects were uncommitted, some were Noles commits (and wavering) and others were commitments to other schools.

Several ESPN 300 prospects roamed the sidelines, including a few surprises. Alabama commitments Bo Scarbrough (Bradenton, Fla./IMG Academy), No. 21 in the ESPN 300, and 2015 pledge Dallas Warmack (Atlanta/Benjamin E. Mays), No. 297 in the Junior 300, were in Tallahassee for the game.

Florida State will be hosting five official visits this weekend against Syracuse. Here is the rundown on each player:

Damian Prince (Forestville, Md./Bishop McNamara): Prince was a late addition to the visitor list, but he becomes the most important right off the bat. The four-star offensive tackle is fresh off an official visit to Maryland, in which the Terrapins lost to Syracuse. Florida State hopes this visit goes a little better than that one in terms of results. Maryland is still the clubhouse leader, but this official will be one of the more important ones the Seminoles will host all cycle long. Prince fits the bill perfectly as the talented offensive tackle Jimbo Fisher can count on for the next several seasons. He is the No. 26 prospect in the country.

Seminoles hosting two recruits this weekend

It's not a huge weekend for Florida State, in terms of recruiting, when it hosts Syracuse. But there will be two prospects of significance in town.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State's summer camps have been hit or miss in recent years with commitments. But when they come, they come in flurries.

Such was the case with this first session. The Seminoles landed a bunch of commitments that grew their 2014, and 2015, classes.

NEW COMMITS

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The long-awaited visit of Mavin Saunders (Houston/Kinkaid School) to Florida State culminated in a commitment on Saturday afternoon.

The 6-foot-5, 233-pound tight end confirmed that he is joining the Seminoles' 2014 class.

A native of The Bahamas, Saunders chose Florida State over Arkansas, Houston, Illinois, Michigan State, Mississippi State, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Texas Tech and Utah.

Saunders is the Seminoles' only tight end commitment, and could be the only player at the position in this class.

Tim Brewster, Saunders' position and area recruiter, led FSU's efforts to land him. Saunders' commitment caps a strong first session of camp for the Seminoles. Florida State has had four commitments this week.
Tight end is an interesting position to watch at Florida State. Though it appears to be a deep group, it's not that far away from being bare.

Mavin SaundersSam Kahn Jr./ESPNHouston Kinkaid tight end Mavin Saunders has only played one season of football.
HOUSTON -- Like many of the pass-catchers that were competing with him, Houston Kinkaid tight end Mavin Saunders was simply trying to get better on Sunday when he attended the Next Level Athlete South Houston Video Showcase.

Every chance to compete and work is a positive for Saunders, who is trying to catch up to the rest of pack when it comes to football.

Unlike many of the players in attendance, Saunders hasn't spent his entire life -- or even his entire high school career -- playing football. In fact, he hasn't even played it a full year. The 2014 prospect has only one season of football under his belt.
