ACC bowl projections: Week 15

All the bowl announcements will be made Sunday night. For now, we take our best guess at how it is all going to look. The only real question at this point centers on the Chick-fil-A Bowl and Russell Athletic Bowl. Miami and Duke are fighting for the spots in those games.

Given the lopsided score in the ACC title game, we still think Miami is going to Atlanta. But we could be very wrong. Miami versus Louisville in the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando, Fla., would be an intriguing matchup with great storylines, too. Tough decision to make here for the Chick-fil-A Bowl.

Both Boston College and Maryland picked up their sixth wins of the season on Saturday, giving the ACC eight bowl-eligible teams, with three more looming with five wins apiece (North Carolina, Syracuse and Pitt). But if depth has been an asset, it’s come at the cost of clarity, where a five-way tie for first place in the Coastal Division remains a realistic possibility. It may go all the way to season’s end -- with Duke-UNC the headlining act -- before we know exactly how things will shake out.

Beyond the top games, the rest is a muddled mess. North Carolina and Maryland are not listed here, but they easily could be bowl-eligible. Maryland should be able to pick up one more win (at Virginia Tech, Boston College, NC State), but given the performance against Syracuse on Saturday, it also is conceivable the Terps lose out. North Carolina could get to six, too (at Pitt, Old Dominion, Duke), but we only included teams with five or more wins at this point. We'll revisit next week.

Wake Forest is out this week after a disappointing shutout loss to Syracuse coupled with the loss of its best player, receiver Mike Campanaro. Bubble watch now begins for Pitt, which has lost two straight. And keep an eye on suddenly surging North Carolina. The game between the Panthers and Tar Heels in Pittsburgh on Nov. 16 could determine bowl eligibility for both.

We still have Florida State going to the national championship game, but this will remain a developing story as long as Alabama and Oregon keep winning.

Another week full of surprises in the ACC, but only one real shift in the projections. The league now has five bowl-eligible teams, with Duke included in the mix. Congrats to the Blue Devils for making it to consecutive bowls for the first time in league history.

We put Wake Forest into the projections at the bottom and took out Boston College based on the weekend's results. Boston College has an easier road but has to win three more; we can see Wake Forest pulling out the necessary two wins from its remaining slate.

Given the way the middle of the league has played, doing bowl projections is almost like throwing darts blindfolded. We are making our best guesses here at the teams that will end the season bowl eligible, based on their performance to date and projections for the final weeks of the season. Essentially, we have tried to predict every contest until the final regular-season game.

Having said that, we believe the ACC will have more bowl eligible teams than available slots. Here is how we see everything lining up. For this week, anyway.

This is when doing bowl projections gets fun. Twelve teams have three or more wins, giving them all a shot at bowl eligibility midway through the season. Clemson and Virginia Tech already are eligible. Florida State, Miami and Maryland each need one more win to lock down a spot.

We put Duke back in because the Blue Devils need only two more victories to get to six and look like a different team with Anthony Boone.

Syracuse, Wake Forest and Boston College are on the waiting list. NC State may seem a bit high, but we like the Wolfpack there for geographic reasons.

A few tweaks again as a clearer picture emerges. Yes, we know Virginia Tech did play in the Russell Athletic Bowl last year, but we are still penciling the Hokies in that spot. For now.

We shook up the bowl lineup based on the results of this weekend. Sorry, North Carolina, we do not project a bowl trip after the loss to East Carolina. The good news is these are redone each week, so the Tar Heels can play their way back in.
