FSU recruiting: Positions of need

By Corey Dowlar

NoleNation takes a quick look at five positions of need in this 2014 recruiting class.

Offensive tackle

Florida State enters this 2013 with only one certain starter at offensive tackle. Cam Erving, the starting left tackle, is a redshirt junior and could very well jump to the NFL draft after this season, given his high projections. Bobby Hart has played a lot in his first two seasons and could end up being the right tackle. From the Class of 2013, just Wilson Bell is capable of playing tackle, but could just as well end up on the interior depending on how things shake out.

Commitments: Ethan Frith (Summit, Miss./North Pike)

Top targets: Damian Prince (Forestville, Md./Bishop McNamara), Roderick Johnson (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central)

Defensive end

The Seminoles lost three defensive ends to the draft after the 2012 season, so restocking that position was always going to be a priority. The staff overhaul stunted some of the progression on targets they were looking to land in the 2013 cycle and only juco prospect Desmond Hollin and prep Davarez Bryant made it in to the class. The Seminoles would do well to continue to add more depth behind a young, but talented, group of ends already on the roster.

Commitments: Blake McClain (Jacksonville, Fla./Sandalwood)

Top targets: Breeland Speaks (Jackson, Miss./Callaway), Lorenzo Carter (Norcross, Ga./Norcross), Rick Leonard (Middletown, Md./Middletown).

Running back

Devonta Freeman and James Wilder Jr. are the elder statesmen as juniors in 2013. Behind them is just Mario Pender, a redshirt freshman, and true freshman Ryan Green. Fullback Chad Abram will also be a senior, so they'll need to replenish with a bigger back. FSU could take as many as three at the position.

Commitments: None

Top targets: Derrell Scott (Havelock, N.C./Havelock), T.J. Harrell (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Catholic), Aeris Williams (West Point, Miss./West Point), Shai McKenzie (Washington, Pa./Washington).

Wide receiver

Florida State's current group of wide receivers is talented and mature. The only downside to that is that they are about ready to move on. Greg Dent's status is up in the air, but he's a senior anyway. Jarred Haggins, Willie Haulstead and Kenny Shaw are seniors, too. Rashad Greene will be a draft eligible junior and Kelvin Benjamin will be a redshirt junior. FSU will want to load up here.

Commitments: Markell Pack (Purvis, Miss./Purvis), Ryan Sousa (Orlando, Fla./Lake Nona), C.J. Worton (Homestead, Fla./South Dade), JoJo Robinson (Miami/Northwestern).

Top targets: Saeed Blacknall (Englishtown, N.J./Manalapan), Myles Autry (Norcross, Ga./Norcross), Josh Malone (Gallatin, Tenn./Station Camp).

Though both players can rotate from corner to safety, Terrence Brooks and Lamarcus Joyner made their names at safety. And both are seniors in 2013. Tyler Hunter, one of the favorites to play safety next to Brooks as Joyner moves up to corner, is a junior, along with Karlos Williams. The good news for Florida State is that they should have a very experienced and talented group at the position. The bad news is that it has to be restocked.

Commitments: None

Targets: Trey Marshall (Lake City, Fla./Columbia), Kendall Gant (Lakeland, Fla./Lake Gibson), Mattrell McGraw (River Ridge, La./John Curtis Christian ), Cortez McDowell (Locust Grove, Ga./Locust Grove).
