Johnson ready to see FSU in person
By Corey Dowlar
Mike Johnson (Clearwater, Fla./Countryside) has only been to one college football game for a visit.
Nearby USF had the privilege of hosting him last year.
And while Florida State's spring game this Saturday isn't exactly a competitive match, it is the closest thing he'll get to another visit until this fall.
"I am looking for a strong bond with the coaches and players and just seeing how they operate over there at FSU," he said.
Regional recruiter Lawrence Dawsey, the assistant overseeing Johnson's recruitment to Florida State, has begun to strike up a solid relationship. And Johnson says it isn't just with him exclusively.
"I talk to him once a week and the conversations are good," Johnson said. "He doesn't just ask to talk to me, he wants to talk to the whole family. So you can say the conversations are good."
Of course, if Johnson was to select Florida State as the destination for his future, it wouldn't be Dawsey he'd work under. Defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Jeremy Pruitt would have that distinction.
The two have spoken, but meeting Pruitt and person and seeing how he coaches is going to be important to Johnson.
"I've talked to him on the phone, too," he said.
"I would like to see how he reacts when the defensive backs have a good play and how he acts when they have a bad play. And I would like to see how he interacts with all the players on defense."
Texas Tech and Virginia are the latest schools to offer Johnson, who now has more than 10 offers. But he doesn't hold any favorites. That'll come later.
"Not right now, just looking at every school closely," Johnson said.
