CB Payne set to announce commitment

By Dave Hooker

D'Andre Payne is ready to announce his college decision.

Payne shared the information with ESPN just before boarding a plane in the Nashville airport. He had just completed a visit to Vanderbilt's campus.

"Florida State, Tennessee, Clemson and Vanderbilt," the ESPN Watch List cornerback from Washington (D.C.) Friendship said when asked what schools he was considering.

The 5-foot-9, 169-pound prospect said he will commit quietly before noon on April 3. There will be no press conference.

Payne would be a big pickup for any school. Not only is Payne considered one of the top cornerbacks in the East region, he also could help build a pipeline into talent-rich Friendship. The school has turned into one of the top producers of prospects in the Washington, D.C./Baltimore, Md. area.

In 2012, several prospects from Friendship signed with Div.-I schools, led by five-star defensive lineman Eddie Goldman and four-star athlete Albert Reid, who signed with Florida State and Maryland, respectively. In 2013, linebacker Yannick Ngakoue, offensive lineman Derwin Gray and linebackers Cavon Walker and Jermaine Carter signed with Maryland.

Payne currently is teammates with ESPN Watch List cornerback Jalen Tabor, receiver Chigozie Onyewere and defensive back Daejuan Funderburk. All have received BCS scholarship offers.
