FSU offer came as a surprise to Johnson
By Corey Dowlar
It doesn't always take a lot of communication to precede an offer in today's college football recruiting world. Such was the case on Wednesday with Mike Johnson (Clearwater, Fla./Countryside).
While at school, Johnson was told Florida State had offered him. And he definitely wasn't expecting that.
"I couldn't believe they offered me," he said. "I hadn't been hearing from them. I was really excited, but I was also really surprised."
One of the staffers at Countryside was the first to deliver the news to Johnson. But he'd get it directly from the source just a little bit later.
"I talked to one of my coaches, and he put me on the phone with somebody else, and he put me on with Jimbo Fisher," said Johnson. "They had already told my coach that they offered.
"He was saying, 'I love the way you play ball. We need to get you up here soon.' They were really trying to get me to come up there. They said they can't wait to meet me."
Johnson took Fisher's words to heart, apparently. He says he will try to get up to Tallahassee as soon as he can.
"I plan on it," he said.
Louisville, Iowa State, UCF, USF, Cincinnati, Purdue, Ohio and now Florida State are the 5-foot-11, 175-pound defensive back's offers. The Seminoles offer moves them firmly toward the top, but there isn't a numerical order of schools just yet.
"It does," he said. "I don't have a list, but I have some schools that I know that I am interested in."
Johnson said he definitely plans to visit Florida State and UCF over the summer and likely will camp at UCF. No other camps have been set up as of now.
