DL McBride lands big offer
By Corey Dowlar
(Plant City, Fla./Plant City) and his coach thought something like this might happen.
After going to a couple camps, the 6-foot-4, 305-pound lineman was starting to get noticed. He was winning his battles and looking impressive in drills.
Then, suddenly, his phone buzzed on Monday and it was his high school coach on the line. Florida State assistant coach Odell Haggins wanted to talk.
"My coach was talking to me, and he said, 'Remember what we were talking about with recruiting?'" McBride said. "He told me that Coach Haggins was going to call me.
"We talked for about 30 minutes and I found out I had an offer."
McBride has shown to be capable on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Haggins, though, is looking at him on the defensive side.
Either way, Haggins wants him in the fold sooner rather than later. But McBride isn't ready to make that decision just yet.
"He told me that he would prefer if I committed early just because they need some defensive linemen," McBride said. "But I kind of explained that I wanted to enjoy the process."
Visits are the next logical choice in McBride's process. He'd like to take some trips, to FSU as well, but he doesn't know when they will happen.
Traveling isn't cheap and finances impact decisions.
"I'm thinking about it," he said. "I want to, but I just know know if I will have the money to."
McBride also has offers from Florida International, Ohio and UCF. USF is another program that has been showing some interest. FSU is one of his top schools, but not a clear-cut favorite.
"They are one of my top schools, but not my top one," McBride said. "As much as I like FSU, I really love UCF."
