Florida State linebackers coach Charles Kelly called Russell's high school coach to get in touch with the 6-foot-3, 300-pound defensive tackle. He did, and Russell received somewhat of a surprise when it wasn't Kelly on the other line.
"Coach Kelly got in touch with my coach," Russell said. "My coach then told me during weight lifting that they wanted to offer me. He then got me on the phone with Coach Fisher. And he told me that he was going to offer me a scholarship."
Talking to the head coach, Russell said, lets him know a team is serious about recruiting him. And when the ESPN Watch List member is able to do that, it holds a little more weight with him.
"It always great to talk to a head coach of a team," he said. "It means a little bit more. It's great to talk to any head coaches."
At least until summer gets here, Russell doesn't have any plans as far as making unofficial visits. But once he gets the chance, he'd like to be organized and have a clear plan of action.
"I am just trying to figure out and get a schedule made of where I will have a chance to go," Russell said. "Wherever is the most convenient for my parents."
Russell has other major offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Stanford, USC and Vanderbilt.
