McClain nearly commits on visit
By Corey Dowlar
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Blake McClain (Jacksonville, Fla./Sandalwood) nearly made his declaration on Saturday.
On his visit to Florida State for junior day, McClain saw all he needed to and then some. But instead of making his choice, he elected to delay until his final visit to see North Carolina next week.
"This close," he said with a smile. "This close. But I am going to wait until next week. Next Friday I am going to North Carolina.
"It was unexpected. The way they had it set up, it was just -- wow."
New defensive ends coach Sal Sunseri spent a good amount of the day with McClain talking about how he could be incorporated into the system. They flipped on some game film from the NFL to further establish Sunseri's points.
"He was funny," McClain said. "We watched a little game film on some pro pass rushers and stuff like that teaching me technique."
Of course, it wouldn't be a junior day without meeting the head coach.
McClain went into Jimbo Fisher's office to hear his pitch and was impressed.
"I talked to him for a little bit," he said. "He's a great guy.
"He was basically telling me that he thinks this school would be a great fit for me. And I am thinking the same thing now."
Florida, one of the other finalists for McClain, was a place he'd visited earlier last summer. But the Gators were unable to make a similar impact on his decision.
"I visited over the summer and the experience there, I mean, it was nothing like this," he said. "All I did was go to a game and they showed me around some of the campus, but here they just treated us like we were part of the family. That was a big factor."
McClain has offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, North Carolina and West Virginia.
