Sawyer gets the offer he wanted

By Radi Nabulsi

The Georgia coaching staff has offered a number of North Gwinnett (Ga.) High School prospects over the years. Senior offensive tackle DeVondre Seymour just signed the Bulldogs 10 days ago and sophomore offensive tackle Mitch Hyatt was offered last week.

Both of those standouts have developed their skills by hammering on junior defensive end Dante Sawyer, who picked up an offer from the Bulldogs on his visit today.

“I got off the phone with Coach [Bryan] McClendon two nights ago and he told me to expect some good things when I got here,” Sawyer said. “Honestly this offer means a lot. Growing up in Georgia I have been waiting for this a long time. I really like going over to Athens on the weekends, so I think this is pretty cool.”

The ESPN Watch List member said that Georgia coaches don’t have to go far to find top talent.

“It is only a 30-minute drive so they come down here a lot to check up on us and to talk to us whenever they can,” Sawyer said.

The coaches have a recruiting ally in Seymour. He is trying to bring Sawyer with him to Athens.

“We have talked about it plenty of times,” Sawyer said. “He is still bugging me about that. He still wants me to come to UGA with him. He kind of knew I was going to get an offer so he already started in on me.”

The 6-foot-3, 250-pound defensive end has a lot of options, with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Ohio State, USC and more.

“I plan on narrowing down my list pretty soon,” Sawyer said. “I will focus on the schools I can see playing at. I’m going to Louisville or Florida State next week and probably Mississippi State on March 2. I have a lot of places I need to go.”

Sawyer said he loved everything about his visit to Alabama last month and the Tide will definitely be in his top group. An offer from the Seminoles could also put Florida State in that group as well.

“I have been to Tallahassee before and I like it down there,” Sawyer said. “I like the kind of defense they pay and I can see myself there.”
