Offers piling up for Fla. defensive back
By Corey Dowlar
It's been quite a February for John Battle (Hallandale, Fla./Hallandale).
No less than five of his eight total offers have come in during the last 12 days -- from schools such as Florida State, West Virginia, South Florida, South Carolina and Rutgers.
"It has been crazy," he said. "Offers have been coming in from nowhere. I am surprised, I am kind of in disbelief."
The next step, Battle says, is to take some visits to see what schools have to offer.
Up first are the Seminoles this weekend. Battle will head up to Tallahassee to meet with assistant coach Sal Sunseri, his primary recruiter.
"Their tradition that they have," he said of Florida State. "And it is just a Florida school, too."
He'd like to go to some other places, too. But that is limited not only by his schedule, but also his family's.
"As of right now, that's about it," said Battle. "I want to go to South Carolina, but I have to ask my parents about that."
SEC West power LSU, another relatively recent offer for Battle, has his attention early.
The Tigers have been known over the last few years for their fierce defenses and playmaking defensive backs. Battle thinks he could fit that mold someday. And a trip to Baton Rouge will definitely be one of his camp stops this summer.
"Most likely because I know that I am going to the LSU camp, so most likely, yes," he said.
"I love the tradition there. That is DB-U right there. I like the school itself, not just the football program."
Battle says he doesn't have a top group of schools right now, but admits one might be beginning to get a foothold.
"Pretty much everybody is even right now," he said. "I'd say that LSU has a slight edge because of their broadcasting program."
