Johnson to work on his teammates

By Corey Dowlar

ORLANDO, Fla. -- From the moment the final gun sounded after the state semifinal two weeks ago, Miami (Fla.) Booker T. Washington began considering the reward of revenge.

Michael Johnson
Florida State commit Michael Johnson is hoping that high school teammates Matthew Thomas and Denver Kirkland join him as Seminoles.
Jacksonville The Bolles School had knocked it off in the championship game a season prior, and now the Tornadoes were awarded another try.

Washington took full advantage, winning 35-7 in convincing fashion.

"I am very excited,"Michael Johnson said. "This is what we have been waiting on.

"When we first heard we had Bolles again, we made a promise that we weren't going to lose this game. We're going to go out with a bang."

Johnson, a Florida State commitment for a while now, will begin to start adding to his 5-foot-10, 170-pound frame. He's plenty quick and agile enough to stand out at the high school level, but he knows college is a whole new ball game.

He plans on turning to some of his teammates to help him get motivated and see gains.

"I am going to start working out, getting a little bigger," he said. "Going to start working out with Six (Matthew Thomas) and be with my teammates."

Guys such as Thomas and Denver Kirkland are major 2013 prospects that Florida State desperately covets. Johnson does, too.

They talk about continuing their careers together, but they don't get too involved.

"Sometimes I will talk to them about it, but it is relaxed," Johnson said. "I do talk about it, though. We are a big part of that team. We are big playmakers.

"It would be very cool."

Up next for Johnson is an official visit to Tallahassee, the only one he'll make. He plans on making sure it is the same weekend that Thomas and Kirkland will be there.

He also plans on doing some recruiting himself while there.

"I am just going to Florida State," he said. "I am going in January, but I am about to change my visit because I want to go with my fellas."
