Martinez disappointed to miss visit

By Corey Dowlar

Saturday would have been the perfect opportunity for Corey Martinez (Tampa, Fla./Catholic) to kill two birds with one stone.

USF hosted Florida State in an in-state battle at Raymond James Stadium, just around the corner from Martinez' house, with both programs having already offered. But it wasn't to be, as a high school obligation stood in the way.

"I couldn't make it," Martinez said. "We had a homecoming dance so I was tied up with that.

"Definitely, if I didn't have homecoming, I would have been there in a heartbeat. I would have really loved to watch that game in person."

As Florida State improved to 5-0 on the year with a 30-17 win over the Bulls, Martinez, like other prospects, can see the momentum gaining. And for him, that is really important.

After all, Martinez wants to know he can develop to as an ESPN Watch List recruit.

"I just really like how they are building," he said. "You can see the difference from last year to this year dramatically in how they are developing the team and competing against Clemson and beating them. It is something that is really good to see a program build on the recruits they are getting in. I really like to see that in a team."

Martinez had a chance to talk to the Seminoles' offensive line coach, Rick Trickett, right before the weekend. The two tried to build upon a strong foundation that has already been set.

"Friday, I talked to Coach Trickett for about 30 minutes and talked about football and team," Martinez said. "We have a really good relationship and we had a good talk together."

As a junior, Martinez has offers from Florida State, Kentucky, Miami (Fla.), South Florida and Vanderbilt. But none of them hold an edge just yet.

It is still early and he's not in any kind of rush to end the process.

"To be honest with you, no teams stick out," Martinez said. "I can say that the Florida schools kind of stick out to me. It depends if I want to stay in Florida or not, I am not really sure yet because I haven't gone outside of the state to see what the other schools have to offer. So I think next year, around this time, I should be able to start narrowing down my top schools."
