With one tweet, Christian Morgan (Plano, Texas/Prestonwood Christian) became an available recruit once again.
The three-star tight end announced via Twitter Thursday morning that he has decommitted from Florida State and will look to explore other options. Morgan, a 6-foot-5, 250-pound senior, said it wasn’t a decision based on Florida State negatives but more of revisiting all options in front of him. He has 19 offers.
“It was a really tough decision for me, but my life is about a lot more than football,” Morgan said. “I need to step back and realize where I need to be.”
Morgan said he is now considering Ole Miss, Baylor and Arkansas. A drive from Plano to Tallahassee, Fla., would have taken roughly 12½ hours nonstop. The longest drive of his three new favorites is Oxford, Miss., which is roughly 7 ½ hours.
That drive, however, may not be as bad if he and his sister agree to attend the same school. Younger sister Ashley Morgan is a standout outside hitter for Prestonwood’s volleyball team, and she’s been offered a scholarship to play there.
Both Morgans are headed to Ole Miss this weekend for an unofficial visit. Christian made Ole Miss his first official visit during the middle of last month, when Ole Miss hosted Texas.
“It was a blast,” Morgan said after the trip. “My family really loves Ole Miss. My sister’s getting recruited to play volleyball there, so she loved hanging out there. It was just great to see the coaches again. I have a great relationship with those guys, pretty much the whole staff.
“The Grove was nuts, and the atmosphere was crazy. The game didn’t go the way they wanted, but Coach [Hugh] Freeze is working with what he has. Overall, it was a great experience.”
As for Florida State, Morgan said decommitting was one of the hardest things he’s had to do, considering he’s been a Seminoles fan for a while. He holds no ill feelings toward the program, and he wishes them success in the future.
“They gave me the opportunity of a lifetime, and I just want to thank them,” Morgan said. “I never meant to change my mind like this, and I will always be an FSU fan.”
