Demarcus Christmas commits to FSU

10/1/2012

ESPN Watch List defensive tackle Demarcus Christmas (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee) committed to Florida State on Monday morning.

Florida State now has seven commitments for the class of 2014, the most of any school in the country.

The 6-foot-4, 290-pound junior chose Florida State over Alabama and South Florida, according to Manatee assistant coach Steve Gulach. He also had offers from Auburn, Florida, Miami and South Carolina, among others.

“Our head coach, Joe Kinnan, was talking with Demarcus last week and asked how he felt about schools because even though he’s young, things were getting crazy,” Gulach said. “Demarcus grew up a fan of Florida State and for him this was a dream come true.”

Gulach, Manatee’s defensive line coach, said Kinnan and FSU assistant Odell Haggins spoke late last week and the FSU defensive tackles coach was on hand to watch Christmas play Friday night.

Kinnan and Christmas informed Haggins of their decision Monday morning.

“It had been going around all weekend but Demarcus and Coach Kinnan made it official [Monday] morning,” Gulach said. “I know Coach Haggins has been very high on Demarcus.”

Gulach said he stresses to all of his defensive linemen to know their future position coach before committing because that is the main coach with whom they will be dealing.

He feels like Haggins is one of the best in football.

“Coach Haggins has consistently developed top players and he’s been doing it for so long,” Gulach said. “He’s been at Florida State for 20-plus years so he’s got the credentials to back it up. Demarcus is going to be in good hands and as a coach that’s what you hope for all your players.”
