LHP Alec Byrd commits to Seminoles

7/28/2012

Head coach Mike Martin's 2013 recruiting class got its second addition, and ninth overall, on Saturday morning when Alec Byrd (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) left-handed pitcher gave his commitment to Florida State.

In the end, Byrd felt like Tallahassee was just the place for him to be.

"Their tradition, their coaching staff, their facilities, just everything," he said. "They are just a great school all around and I just loved it when I went."

Byrd was sought after by the big programs in the Sunshine State holding offers from at least three programs in Florida.

"It was basically between FSU and Miami," Byrd mentioned "But I had offers from FIU and FAU, too. I went to Gainesville, but I wasn't offered."

Pitching coach Mike Bell, entering his second season, was another reason Byrd selected Florida State. Bell's reputation as a coach who can develop talent proved a big draw for Byrd.

"I have heard from many people that he is the best around," Byrd mentioned. "He will help develop my skills, and talking to him, I really liked him and I felt like he knew his stuff."

At 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, the St. Thomas Aquinas ace brings variety from the left side. Included in his arsenal is a fastball, two types of curveballs, two change-ups and a cutter.

"The thing about about me is that my repertoire is very extensive, so I have many different ways to get a hitter out," he explained.

Byrd will make an official visit to FSU at some point during the fall.
