Rumors have swirled recently that Sojourn Shelton (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Plantation) wasn't completely firm in his commitment to Florida State.
On Tuesday, the four-star defensive back decided to completely open things up.
"I honestly feel like -- with the recruiting and everything, with respect to the Florida State staff -- I have been committed there for a year and you kind of make a pact with these guys because they are going to be your coaches for a while," he began to explain. "I just feel like, with me, I am graduating early and enrolling in January, so I kind of want to make sure it is the best decision that I can make because you can't get that decision back.
"I didn't want to be sneaking around and visiting other schools or anything like that. I just want to open it up and make sure I take all my official visits and make the right decision."
The 5-foot-10, 152-pound cornerback says the Seminoles are still in it, though. He just wants to take his time, and his visits, to be sure of his college choice.
"Florida State is still in it," he said. "Wisconsin, Wake Forest, and just really to be honest with you, the ones that I feel strong with, I would have to say Florida State, Wisconsin and South Carolina. There are other schools that fall into that mix, UCF is in it, but right now, I want to have everyone on an equal level and start to evaluate thoroughly."
A school's strength program and coaching staff will be at the top of the list, as far as concerns go, for Shelton moving forward.
Because his weight limits him some physically against big, strong receivers, the former FSU commitment wants to find a place that can help him add size -- and add it quick.
"The on-going theme with me is my size," Shelton said. "I did get taller, I am 5-10, but it is my weight. I just want to get to a strong enough program to be able to put on that mass. I want a stable coaching staff. It is kind of scary how coach Terrell Buckley and "Korndog" left, and possibly, we don't know what is going to happen to Coach Stoops. I just want to go somewhere that is stable. It is a whole lot to think about and I will have to take it from there."
