Florida State and West Virginia are close to finalizing an agreement to open the 2020 season in Atlanta, sources told ESPN's Brett McMurphy.
The game would be played Sept. 5, 2020, at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
This will be the fourth meeting between the Seminoles and Mountaineers, but their first in the regular season. All previous meetings were FSU wins in the Gator Bowl: 2010 (33-21), 2005 (30-18) and 1982 (31-12).
The teams also had a home-and-home series scheduled in 2012 and '13, but West Virginia canceled it after joining the Big 12 before the 2012 season.
Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher is a West Virginia native. Fisher recently asked high school coaches in the state of Florida to donate one uniform, including equipment and practice jerseys, to ensure West Virginia high schools damaged by severe flooding can play this fall.
Last month in West Virginia, 23 people were killed by the floods, which also caused significant damage to several schools.
FSU and WVU are both involved in neutral-site games over the next few seasons.
This fall, FSU plays Ole Miss in Orlando and WVU faces BYU in Landover, Maryland. In 2017, FSU meets Alabama in Atlanta, while West Virginia plays Virginia Tech in Landover, Maryland. In 2018, the Mountaineers meet Tennessee in Charlotte.
