Florida Gators: Jason Hatcher

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- I was unable to get to all the questions on Wednesday’s weekly chat, but since there were so many -- and the angst from Florida’s Allstate Sugar Bowl loss to Louisville was still fresh -- we decided to answer them today.

Dave (New Jersey): Mike you say we are done with our class at 26? Don't we have 8 EEs that can date back to next year giving us another 6-7 spots open in this class? We lost a lot of bodies so the staff must get at least 31 in this class IMO. Thoughts?

The Gators will try and sign several more players, but Muschamp has gone on record before saying he’s not going to sign players just to fill out a class. I anticipate only two to three more commitments, if that. UF is still after DT Jarran Reed, Jay-nard Bostwick, Montravius Adams, Elijah Daniel, Jason Hatcher, Chris Jones, James Clark, Alex Collins, Jalen Ramsey, Kennard Swanson and Quinton Powell. If Muschamp can get some of those guys, fine, but if not, he won’t just sign guys so he can fill out the class.

RemmyR (Maple Shade, N.J.): Just want to say thanks to you for dropping UF science on us every week!!!

You’re welcome. I enjoy interacting with fans. You guys are the lifeblood of what I do so these chats are the least I can do.

FLAGTR239: Of all the commits, from what you've seen, who do you feel will make an impact next season?

A: With the No. 1-ranked class in the country right now, there are several Florida commitments who I feel will have some sort of impact. Kelvin Taylor will have an impact on the offense. Running back Matt Jones displayed what he's capable of in the win over Florida State, but he'll only be a sophomore. Taylor, who's enrolling in January, will have a chance to learn the offense in the spring and compete for playing time early on. I still believe Jones will start, but Taylor should see plenty of carries. Defensively, Vernon Hargreaves III will be an All-American by the time he leaves Florida. He's an intelligent and physically gifted defensive back. Hargreaves has excelled at every event -- whether 7-on-7s or actual games -- I've seen him play in. Florida has depth at corner, but Hargreaves is just too talented to keep off the field early on.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida is hosting its annual football banquet this weekend and as usual it will use this time to bring in several recruits. With Florida having a majority of its class already filled, most of the visitors will be committed players or underclassmen.

Quinton Powell
Tom Hauck/ESPNHSFlorida hopes to reaffirm the commitment of linebacker Quinton Powell on his official visit to the school this weekend.
Linebacker commits Quinton Powell (Daytona Beach, Fla./Mainland) and Daniel McMillian (Jacksonville, Fla./First Coast) have been looking around. Powell wants to take visits to USC and Miami (Fla), while McMillian has visited Ohio State recently. Both players will be officially visiting Florida this weekend. Florida will try and reaffirm McMillian's and Powell's commitments.

Powell said he's excited to be around the other Florida commits.

Recruiting mailbag: Phillips, Brown, LBs

xtremecheezhead: How will the addition of Joker Phillips impact WR recruiting?

A: There is no question in my mind this will have a very big impact in recruiting for Florida. It might not be this year because the Gators already have four wide receiver commits and might only take one more receiver. Phillips has helped develop several top receivers including Randall Cobb of the Green Bay Packers, and he should able to sell that to recruits. As I said in my update on Monday, the Gators are still in the picture for several receivers, and the Phillips addition will only help Florida's cause.

Gators looking to flip juco DT

GAINESILLE, Fla. -- Former ESPN 150 defensive end Dante Fowler Jr. surprised a lot of people in February by switching his commitment from Florida State to Florida on national signing day. Fowler had been committed to the Seminoles for more than a year. Four-star quarterback Skyler Mornhinweg, a former Penn State commitment, also switched his commitment to Florida just prior to signing day.

This type of thing happens all the time in college football, and this year will likely be no different.

Cummings
Scouts Inc.Defensive tackle Darious Cummings was a heralded FSU signee coming out of Titusville, Fla. in the class of 2010.
The Gators are looking for help at defensive tackle, and Ole Miss commitment Darious Cummings just might be that guy. Junior Sharrif Floyd has had a solid junior year and he could end up heading to the NFL after the season. The Gators would be left with Dominique Easley, Leon Orr, Damien Jacobs and Quinteze Williams as the only scholarship defensive tackles.

USC commit Jason Hatcher making visits

INDIANAPOLIS -- Louisville (Ky.) Trinity defensive end and Jason Hatcher committed to USC two months ago and is adamant that he is solid to the Trojans, but the ESPN 300 prospect wants to take all five of his official visits.

Hatcher, ranked the nation's No. 288 overall recruit by ESPN, committed to USC over Florida, Louisville and Tennessee, and he plans to visit two of those other programs. One more school is definitely in the running, and he is looking for a fourth to complete his five visits, with USC getting the last one.

"I've been talking to Florida. I know I'll probably go up to Ohio State. I know I'm going to USC. Those are the only ones I know for sure," he said. "I'll probably go to Tennessee as well."
