ORLANDO, Fla. -- With the addition of ESPN 150 safety Marcell Harris, Florida has moved to the No. 1 spot in the latest class rankings.

The Trojans had held on to the top spot for a while -- with 16 of their 17 commits in the ESPN 300, and 11 in the ESPN 150. But Harris becoming Florida’s 10th ESPN 150 prospect and the 16th four-star recruit in UF's 22-player class was enough to overtake USC for the No. 1 ranking.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- ESPN 150 safety Marcell Harris (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips) verbally committed to Florida on Thursday morning. The 6-foot-1, 209-pound four-star prospect chose Florida over Florida State, Oklahoma and Texas in a ceremony at his school.

Harris, whose father, Mike, played safety for the Gators in the mid 90s, said he felt Florida was the best fit for him.

"It just felt like the place I needed to be at," Harris said. "They are all great schools, they all fit my type of playing style, but in the end I had to pick Florida. The Florida coaching staff, they are all great to me. It's close to home as always, but that really never played a factor. It was just the family feeling, being at home and playing with some great players."

The No. 7-ranked safety said Florida coach Will Muschamp was quick to react when he informed him of his decision.

"He was just happy and excited," Harris said. "He was just happy to add me to the roster ...

"He got Vernon Hargreaves, he got Keanu Neal, Nick Washington and me. We have to build this 'No Fly Zone' and now we representing. We have to represent in 2014. We have a bright future ahead and there's more to come."

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Heading into his senior season, safety Marcell Harris (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips) is still trying to figure out which programs to focus on. The 6-foot-1, 209-pound member of the ESPN 150 is hoping to get his officials set up during the season and says his plan is to take visits until he finds the right program. While he doesn't have a top group, a couple of programs have caught the defensive back's eye this summer.

The Texas Longhorns have been able to get Harris on campus, and it looks like they will also get a chance to show him what game day is like in Austin.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- ESPN 150 defensive back Marcell Harris (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips) decided to make a last-minute trip to Florida State on Thursday for the afternoon session of the Jimbo Fisher Camp.

The 6-foot-1, 209-pound senior took a few minutes to work out and catch up with FSU defensive coordinator Mark Stoops.

“Yeah I just did two drills and I was chilling after that, watching some of the other guys go,” Harris said. “I worked with coach Stoops a little bit and we talked in the football office a little bit before that. I was in there with a couple other guys and they wanted to try to all of us up here so they were excited about that.”

ESPN 150 safety Marcell Harris (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips) has heard it all before. He's heard the doubters say that he's too big to play safety and should prepare for a future as a linebacker.

Harris admitted it was a motivating tool for his efforts at The Opening this past week.

"I did go there with a little bit of a chip on my shoulder because I'm a safety and I want people to see that I can be a very good safety," Harris said. "I'm a bigger safety. I'm unique for the position but I've worked hard to succeed at this position."
