GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Will Muschamp’s search for a new defensive coordinator didn’t last very long.
Just two hours after Dan Quinn was named the defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks, Muschamp promoted D.J. Durkin to replace Quinn.
Durkin has been UF’s linebackers coach and special-teams coordinator for the past three seasons. He joined UF’s staff in 2010 under former coach Urban Meyer and was one of three assistant coaches Muschamp retained for his inaugural staff.

Editor’s note: Every Tuesday and Thursday through Jan. 31, 2013, GatorNation will break down each position. We’ll look at 2013, of course, but also try and give you a peek beyond next season, too. Today is defensive end. Thursday will be defensive tackle.
DEFENSIVE END
Two-deep: Dominique Easley is the starter at end and Lerentee McCray is the starter at the buck (end/linebacker hybrid). Jonathan Bullard and Dante Fowler are the reserves. McCray graduates. Easley is a junior but could leave early for the NFL.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – D.J. Durkin has been a valuable member of Florida coach Will Muschamp’s staff, both as a linebackers coach/special teams coordinator and a recruiter. But he’s not going to be around forever.
Durkin is headed for a coordinator’s job, and there are plenty of jobs available across the country. What if Durkin were to leave Florida? What kind of impact would that have on the Gators’ recruiting?
Potentially a pretty significant one.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida has lost a pair of reserve defensive linemen to knee injuries this week, and at least one is definitely out for the season.
UF coach Will Muschamp said Friday that senior defensive tackle Nick Alajajian suffered a fractured right knee and will miss the 2012 season and redshirt junior defensive end Kedric Johnson suffered a dislocated left knee and will miss a significant period of time. Both players were involved in special teams and haven't made any impact on defense, but losing those two does hurt the Gators in terms of veteran depth.
Alajajian (6-foot-4, 285 pounds) was a reserve offensive lineman for his first three seasons but was moved to defensive tackle in the spring. Johnson has just nine tackles and one sack in 25 career games.

ESPN’s GatorNation is previewing each position leading up to the start of the season with a short video. Each Friday until the season kicks off, Michael DiRocco and Jeff Barlis will analyze a position group, tell you who is starting and why, and provide a breakdown of the depth at the position. This week it’s linebackers.
The starters: SLB Michael Taylor (RSo.) OR Antonio Morrison (Fr.), MLB Jonathan Bostic (Sr.), WLB Jelani Jenkins (RJr.)
The backups: Lerentee McCray (RSr.), Darrin Kitchens (Jr.), Neiron Ball (RSo.), Jeremi Powell (Fr.), Gideon Ajagbe (RSo.), Kedric Johnson (RJr.), Alex McCalister (Fr.), Bryan Cox, Jr. (Fr.)
Comment: Bostic and Jenkins are stalwarts who are tackling machines. UF coach Will Muschamp, however, challenged them in the spring to start making more big plays. That’s directly related to Jenkins dropping six interceptions last season. Taylor is a versatile player who can play all three spots and Morrison was an early enrollee who drew praise for his physical play. If or when DE/LB Ronald Powell returns from his ACL tear this season, McCray will move back to strongside linebacker.

Every Friday until the season kicks off, Michael DiRocco and Jeff Barlis will analyze the players, tell you who is starting and why, and provide a breakdown of the depth at the position. This week it’s the defensive line.
The starters: DE/LB Lerentee McCray (RSr.), DT Dominique Easley (Jr.), DT Omar Hunter (RSr.), DE Sharrif Floyd (Jr.)
The backups: DE/LB Dante Fowler, Jr. (Fr.), DE/LB Gideon Ajagbe (RSo.), DE/LB Kedric Johnson (RJr.), DE/LB Alex McCalister (Fr.), DE/LB Bryan Cox, Jr. (Fr.), DT Leon Orr (RSo.), DT Damien Jacobs (Jr.), DT Dante Phillips (Fr.), NT Nick Alajajian (Sr.), DT Quinteze Williams (Fr.), DT Jafar Mann (Fr.), DE Jonathan Bullard (Fr.)
Comment: The line would be much better with DE/LB Ronald Powell, who is out for at least part of the season with a torn ACL. There is a lot of depth, which is in contrast to last season. Easley and Floyd have All-SEC potential, and the hope is some of the freshmen will develop enough to allow the Gators to slide Floyd inside to tackle, which is his more natural position. McCray was having a solid season last year until a shoulder injury caused him to miss four of the final five games. Fowler and Cox could see a lot of time at DE/LB (which UF calls the buck) early in practice to see if they can handle the spot.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Gators' biggest recruiting weekend of the year has apparently gone into overtime.
After several failed attempts to visit the Gators this year, Florida defensive end prospect Leonard Williams finally made it on campus for an official visit. He arrived on Monday and is planning on returning to his home in Daytona Beach (Fla.) on Wednesday.
Williams visits Florida fresh off another official visit, this one to Southern Cal this past weekend. Most believe Williams will decide between Florida, Auburn, FSU and USC on national signing day.

Florida continues to enjoy success on the recruiting trail in the state of North Carolina. On the heels of landing ESPNU 150 D-End Jonathan Bullard (Shelby, N.C./Crest), Monday the Gators secured a verbal from defensive end prospect Alex McCalister (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth).
The four-star may not be as college ready as his fellow North Carolinian and Gator commit Bullard, but he is a promising prospect. He is a tall, lean, and rangy kid who needs to keep filling out his frame, but he is physical and can explode off the ball and be an active and disruptive defender. He can be tough against the run, but to be consistently productive at the next level he needs to get bigger and stronger and be sure to keep his pads down and use his hands better. He can move well and cover some ground in pursuit. He flashes good ability as a pass rusher, but can be a bit raw and has room to improve.

On Monday afternoon, four-star defensive end Alex McCalister (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) joined Florida's other weekend pledges, linebacker Bryan Cox Jr. (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and 2013 running back Adam Lane (Winter Haven, Fla./Winter Haven).

Four-star defensive end Alex McCalister (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) verbally committed to the Florida Gators on Monday, just after his official visit this past weekend to Gainesville.
McCalister chose the Gators over Georgia Tech and in-state team North Carolina.
McCalister is being recruited by Florida to play its buck position, a hybrid defensive end/linebacker position. Bryan Cox Jr. (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas), also recruited for the buck position, committed to Florida on Saturday.
With the addition of McCalister, the Gators now have 20 verbal commitments for the 2012 class.
