ESPN 300 RB Mixon trims list to 10
By Erik McKinney
And then there were 10 for ESPN 300 running back Joe Mixon (Oakley, Calif./Freedom), who narrowed his list of 50 scholarship offers to a more manageable group on Friday.
Mixon released his list through his Twitter account, and prefaced it by saying it was in no particular order. The 10 programs to make the cut were: California, Florida, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Oregon State, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Washington and Wisconsin.
There aren't too many surprises with the schools included. Oregon State might look like the one that doesn't belong to most college recruiting fans, but the Beavers were Mixon's first scholarship offer, and the big back has a very good relationship with Mike Riley and his coaching staff.
Mixon has official visits scheduled to Texas A&M (Sept. 13) and Oklahoma (Oct. 4) and had an unofficial visit scheduled to Wisconsin for this summer but had to cancel at the last minute due to flight complications.
The Pac-12 North is well represented, with Cal, Oregon, Oregon State and Washington all making the list. It was thought that UCLA and USC were in good position for Mixon, but neither made the cut. It's likely both Los Angeles schools will keep after him as long as Mixon is open to being recruited.
Another Pac-12 North school will stay somewhat in the mix, as Mixon said he will follow through on his plans to take an unofficial visit to Washington State in September.
The 6-foot-1, 209-pound tailback will see a big push from Cal coaches and commitments to stay home, but there are some fierce recruiters on that list, including Urban Meyer at Ohio State and Kevin Sumlin at Texas A&M.
Mixon, the nation's No. 100 overall player, likely will take all five of his official visits before announcing his decision during the U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
