Week in review: No. 2 RB, ESPN 150

By Michael DiRocco

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The selections of Sharrif Floyd and Matt Elam in the first round of the NFL draft dominated the news this week, but there were plenty of other things going on at GatorNation.

We took a look at the eight players who enrolled early and participated in spring practice to see how they fared and what their potential role could be in the fall.

Mack Brown carried only 25 times last fall, but he emerged from spring practice behind only Matt Jones on the depth chart.
The Gators released a post-spring depth chart, which included just one minor surprise: redshirt junior running back Mack Brown was ahead of highly-touted freshman Kelvin Taylor. Muschamp said Taylor has not yet absorbed the offense.

UF so far has lost only one player to transfer: guard Jessamen Dunker. Muschamp announced Wednesday that Dunker, who has been suspended since his January arrest for allegedly stealing a scooter, was leaving the program.

With the release of the ESPN 150 last week, we decided to take a look at the Gators' history of signing ESPN 150 players. The results were interesting: Players ranked in the top 50 turned into starters more than half the time, while players ranked 51-150 turned into starters nearly half the time. That's a pretty good ratio.

On the recruiting trail ...

RecruitingNation's Jeremy Crabtree broke down why Florida, Texas and California are still the kings of producing elite high school talent.

GatorNation's Derek Tyson detailed the meteoric rise of ESPN 150 offensive tackle David Sharpe (Jacksonville, Fla./Providence) and answered your recruiting questions in his weekly mailbag. He addressed the Gator's pursuit of several tight ends and their biggest positions of need for the class of 2014.

Tyson also wrote that offensive tackle Denzel Ward (Bradenton, Fla./IMG Academy) still has the Gators atop his list.

RecruitingNation's Jared Shanker wrote about ESPN 150 offensive lineman Juwann Bushell-Beatty (Paramus, N.J./Catholic) having the Gators in his top three.

Tyson and NoleNation's Corey Dowlar listed the top 10 players that stood out in the 7-on-7 Southeast Regional at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla.
