More SEC interest in Matt Elam
By Dave Hooker
Competition in the SEC continues to heat up for Matt Elam.
Florida is the latest school to ramp up its recruitment of the prospect from Elizabethtown (Ky.) John Hardin. The 6-foot-6, 350-pound defensive lineman visited Gainesville last week.
"The whole campus was just amazing and the facilities are top of the line, and the coaching staff are all real cool people," Elam said.
The Gators have a strong connection to Elam. Receivers coach Joker Phillips recruited Elam when he was the head coach at Kentucky before being fired following the 2012 season. Elam said he enjoyed meeting with Phillips and head coach Will Muschamp. So much so that Elam is planning a return visit for a camp this fall. A scholarship offer could be in the making.
"That's mostly where they offer their players," Elam said, referring to the camp. "Florida is definitely in the running, so I'm going back down in the summer."
Elam could be a good fit for the Gators, who utilize a 3-4 and 4-3 defensive scheme. Elam has the ability to play defensive tackle and nose guard.
Kentucky has shown strong interest under first-year head coach Mark Stoops. Elam recently visited Lexington to see the in-state Wildcats.
"They really want me," Elam said. "They said they want to keep the best players in the state. I'm going to their spring game."
When asked about Lexington and Kentucky's campus, Elam said, "The city is great and the facilities are a little bit old but they are building a new one [practice facility], putting like $135 million in it, so it will be state of the art."
Elam said he will visit Alabama again soon. He has a scholarship offer from the Crimson Tide, as well as offers from Kentucky and Louisville.
