ESPN 150 LB Powell is a Trojan

By Blair Angulo

ESPN 150 linebacker Quinton Powell (Daytona Beach, Fla./Mainland) is heading west, committing to USC during a national signing day announcement televised on ESPNU.

Powell, the No. 6-rated outside linebacker and No. 99 player overall, picked the Trojans over Florida -- where he was formerly committed -- as well as Miami (Fla.), Oregon and South Carolina.

"Every time I heard about the decommitments I shrugged it off,” Powell said. “I just thought about myself. I wanted to commit based on my opinion of the school.

"[USC] called me every week, I talked to them very frequently. It was an awesome experience."

What is the impact of Powell’s decision?

Instant Analysis

What it means for USC: It’s another important pickup for USC, which has focused on adding defensive prospects in this class. Powell gives the Trojans a versatile look that figures to fit well with new defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast’s 3-4 scheme. By reeling in another out-of-state prospect, the Trojans soften the blow dealt by a handful of recruiting losses. USC desperately needed another linebacker in the class to pair with No. 4-rated Michael Hutchings, who is also the top-rated player at the position in the West region.

What it means for Florida: Schools never want to lose in-state recruits, but Florida didn’t completely whiff on outside linebackers, reeling in Daniel McMillan and Matt Rolin. In other words, this isn’t necessarily backbreaking for the Gators.

Turning point: After officially visiting Los Angeles, Powell canceled his two final trips to South Carolina and Arkansas. His decision to do so was a clear indication that he would be a Trojan.

Surprise (scale of 1-5): 2. It’s not entirely surprising given that USC assistant coach Tee Martin has been an effective recruiter in the Southeast. It all unraveled quickly but, with former high school teammate Leonard Williams at USC, the Trojans were a predictable choice.

Immediate impact (scale of 1-5): 2. USC has good depth at the linebacker spot, so Powell will be given time to acclimate himself with the college game.
