GatorNation recruiting mailbag
By Derek Tyson
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- It’s time to dip into the GatorNation recruiting mailbag and answer your questions. Because of the amount of questions we’ve received, we won’t be able to get to all of them today -- but we encourage you to post your questions on our Insider fan forum, The Chompions Club.
driverag17:Signing day is coming, and obviously we are all really excited to see how everything turns out. However we all know sometimes the recruits wait longer to sign their LOI. Do you see any of our targets going past signing day on their decisions?
A: At this point, I don't believe Florida will have any targets who'll decide after signing day. Now, that could certainly change, were the Gators to miss out on a target they thought they were going to land and then make a late push for someone else. Remember, just last year the Gators tried to land defensive tackle Fehoko Fanaika after signing day, but he landed at LSU.
Jalen Ramsey remains committed to USC, but Florida and Florida State are in the mix.
secrocks2000:Do you think Jalen Ramsey ends up at USC? What are UF's chances?
A: In my opinion, the chances are slight that Ramsey will end up at USC. With that being said, I'm not sure it will be Florida, either. Like Florida, FSU is very much in the mix. Ramsey really enjoyed his official visit to FSU and I think it will come down to FSU and Florida in the end. Ramsey is good friends with Florida safety commit Nick Washington, but how much that will play into things remains to be seen.
impulse36:Are the Gators looking to get another MLB with [James] Hearns decommitting, or do they have another recruit they think can slide inside, like [Alex] Anzalone?
A: I think it's unlikely Florida will land another true middle linebacker. Quinton Powell is still a possibility, but he is an outside linebacker. Anzalone and Matt Rolin, who are already enrolled, have the size and instincts to move to the middle. Jarrad Davis, at 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds, could also grow into a Mike linebacker.
kendallland1:Do you see Kennard Swanson being able to get in with this class?
A: I believe Florida will let the three-star fullback sign on Feb. 6 if he chooses to, and just wait for his grades and test scores before fully knowing whether he will qualify. It's no secret that Swanson wants to go to Florida. At this point it's just a matter of will he be able to with his grades?
PensacolaGator96:My biggest concerns right now are defensive end and defensive tackle. Who do we fill these two needs with?
A: At defensive end, I believe the most probable option is Auburn commit Tashawn Bower. Robert Nkemdiche is in the mix, but after his weekend visit to Ole Miss, I believe he is a long shot. As for defensive tackle, I think the Gators have a good shot of finishing with Jay-nard Bostwick and Jarran Reed. Reed visited visited Alabama this past weekend.
ga8or22:Are we looking at Tanner McEvoy as a quarterback or a possible tight end? At 6-6 he has the size, but at only 215 he needs to gain some poundage.
A: At this point Florida is looking for an experienced backup quarterback. This doesn't affect how the Gators feel about Max Staver or 2014 QB commit Will Grier. If Jeff Driskel were to go down with an injury next season, they just want someone a little more experience to fill in. If McEvoy were to choose Florida, I wouldn't be surprised to see him switch to tight end by his senior year because of his size and athletic ability.
