OL Johnson makes late arrival count

By Corey Long

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Offensive lineman Rod Johnson (Delray Beach, Fla./American Heritage) was a late arrival to the Under Armour All-America Game, but he didn’t take long to get involved in the fracas.

The 6-foot-4, 315-pound senior was a late injury replacement and arrived here around 9 p.m. ET Monday. He will wear No. 54 in Friday’s game, which will be televised live on ESPN from Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.

Early in today's one-on-one drills, Johnson got into it with Alabama commit DeMarcus Walker (Jacksonville, Fla./Sandalwood) as Walker took exception to the fact that Johnson was lying on top of him.

“Yeah, he was just on top of me and I was trying to push him off,” Walker said. “We talked about it afterward and we’re cool.”

For Johnson it was just a day of competition.

“I wanted to let everyone know right away that I’m here to compete and get physical when necessary,” Johnson said. “Whenever a defensive end and offensive tackle get up against each other something like that may happen.”

Despite not playing in six weeks, Johnson showed up Tuesday in good shape and ready to battle.

“I am used to real physical practice so this was no big thing to me,” Johnson said. “I’ve been out here for over two hours and I’m not huffing and puffing or anything. I try to stay ready just in case.”
