Focusing on five: Defense
By Derek Tyson
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Gators added linebacker Matt Rolin (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) on Sunday, but lost linebacker Quinton Powell (Daytona Beach, Fla./Mainland) on Monday. Florida has just a few remaining spots left in their 2013 recruiting class. With less than two months until national signing day, here is a look at five defensive targets that Florida continues to focus on.
Trey Johnson, once committed to Auburn, will visit Florida this weekend. He's already visited Ohio State.
LB Trey Johnson (Lawrenceville, Ga./Central Gwinnett) -- On Sunday it appeared that Florida was done recruiting the linebacker position, but with the deflection of Powell on Monday, the door opened back up for Johnson, a former Auburn commitment. The Under Armour All-American postponed his visit this weekend to Gainesville until January. Florida has only one other inside linebacker commit (James Hearns) and the Gators are not very deep at the position.
DE Elijah Daniel (Avon, Ind./Avon) -- The ESPN 150 end, who originally committed to Clemson before later backing off his pledge, will visit Florida the weekend of Jan. 12 and the Gators are very much in the picture along with Ole Miss. Auburn defensive commit Tawshawn Bower (Somerville, N.J./Immaculata) could also be in this spot, as he is scheduled to visit this weekend. Florida, however, will likely only take one more defensive end.
CB Jalen Ramsey (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood Academy) -- Florida already has a five-star cornerback commit from Vernon Hargreaves III (Tampa, Fla./Wharton), but the Gators would like to add another corner. At 6-foot-1, Ramsey has the size that the Florida defensive coaches dream about. Florida is also back in the mix for Mackensie Alexander (Immokalee, Fla./Immokalee) but the Gators will likely only take one more corner and despite Ramsey's commitment to USC, he seems to be the most likely candidate.
DT Montravius Adams (Vienna, Ga./Dooly County) -- Florida already has defensive tackle commits from Caleb Brantley (Crescent City, Fla./Crescent City) and juco transfer Darious Cummings (Titusville, Fla./East Mississippi Community College), but Adams is too talented to pass up. Adams claims he will take an official visit to Florida in January. Florida is also looking at Jaynard Bostwick (Port St. Lucie, Fla./Centennial), but the Gators will likely only take one more tackle.
DE Ebenezer Ogundeko (Brooklyn, N.Y./Jefferson) -- Florida was, at one point, in the lead for the ESPN 150 end, but after visiting Clemson recently, Ogundeko now has the Tigers and Gators as co-leaders. At any rate, it appears that Daniel might have passed Ogundeko as Florida's No. 1 defensive end target -- at least for the moment. Ogundeko said he could make his decision as soon as Dec. 21 or at the Under Armour game on Jan. 4.
