Chomp Confidential: UF recruiting notes

By Derek Tyson

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- GatorNation brings you the latest installment of Chomp Confidential, a look inside Florida football recruiting for GatorNation subscribers only. As with anything exclusive, what's reported in the weekly Chomp Confidential must stay here. A few things discussed in this week's update: Johnson back in play?

After Rod Johnson (Delray Beach, Fla./American Heritage) decommitted from the Gators a few months back, most thought his return to this Florida recruiting class would be highly unlikely. However, that is not the case. After the Gators lost out on David Dawson, Florida has once again turned the heat back up on Johnson. The 6-foot-6, 315-pound tackle prospect will likely take visits to West Virginia, Florida and Florida State. I don't necessarily believe the Gators are the team to beat here, but I certainly think they are right back in the mix for Johnson.

New offers go out

The Gators offered 2013 fullback/defensive tackle prospect and LSU commit Kennard Swanson (Lakeland, Fla./Lake Gibson) and his teammate Kendall Gant, a 2014 safety prospect. The Gators offered Swanson as a fullback, but at 6-1, 260 pounds, defensive tackle wouldn't be out of the question either. It's still too early to tell how much, if any, interest Swanson has in the Gators, but Florida has depth issues at fullback and defensive tackle, and pursuing Swanson is worth the risk. Gant is the son of former Dallas Cowboys defensive back Kenny Gant.

Gators looking at juco teammates

After missing out on LSU defensive tackle commit Greg Gilmore (Home Mills, N.C./South View) and finding themselves in a battle for Montravius Adams (Vienna, Ga./Dooly Co.), the Gators are now focusing on a pair of junior college teammates. Darrious Cummings (Scooba, Miss./East Mississippi C.C.), an Ole Miss commit, and teammate Jarran Reed, a North Carolina commit, have piqued Florida's interest recently. Cummings will visit Florida this weekend, and the Gators just offered Reed. Both players were teammates of current Florida defensive tackle Damien Jacobs last season, which could certainly play a factor in their decisions.

Thoughts on Marcell Harris

ESPN 150 safety Marcell Harris (Orlando, Fla./Dr. Phillips) is supposedly ready to make his decision this month between Florida, Florida State, Texas and Oklahoma. The 6-1, 207 pound athlete will square off against five-star cornerback commitment Vernon Hargreaves III (Tampa, Fla./Wharton) in the first round of the playoffs on Friday. With his familiarity with the Florida program, and a potential to play early because of a lack of depth at the safety position next year, in my opinion, Harris will make his commitment to the Gators on Nov. 29, when he is planning to make his announcement.
