Alex Anzalone sticking with Notre Dame

By Jared Shanker

Technically nothing changed, but Notre Dame coaches are thrilled with the decision Wyomissing (Pa.) area senior Alex Anzalone made Monday.

The ESPN 150 outside linebacker reaffirmed his commitment to the Irish after leaving South Bend following an unofficial visit that took place Sunday into Monday.

Despite being committed to Notre Dame since July, speculation was rampant Anzalone would end up signing with Florida. Anzalone said Monday via his Twitter account @AlexAnzalone_24 he is 100 percent on board with Notre Dame and will not entertain any other offers.

“First off, I want to thank the coaches who have been supportive of me throughout my recruitment. There have been many highs and lows but when it came down to it I had to find the best fit for me. I have developed close relationships with many GREAT coaches, but at the end of the day I had to chose [sic] one school. I have been committed to ND since July. With that, I want to reaffirm my commitment to Notre Dame and shut down my recruitment completely with all other schools. God bless!”

It was the first visit to Notre Dame that Anzalone made since his July commitment. Since then he visited Florida twice, once for Friday Night Lights and again for the Oct. 6 game against LSU. Anzalone’s father also graduated from medical school at Florida, and Anzalone has several family members who still live in the Sunshine State.

At The Opening in July, Anzalone chose the Irish over Florida and Penn State. Anzalone originally committed to Ohio State in April but decommitted a few weeks later in early May.

Anzalone, No. 5 among outside linebackers nationally, is the third-best prospect committed to Notre Dame’s class. Fellow outside linebacker Jaylon Smith is the top prospect committed, giving the Irish a formidable linebacker tandem for the future.

In a text message to ESPN.com, Anzalone said he will enroll early at Notre Dame. The spring semester at Notre Dame begins Jan. 15.
