GAINESILLE, Fla. -- Former ESPN 150 defensive end Dante Fowler Jr. surprised a lot of people in February by switching his commitment from Florida State to Florida on national signing day. Fowler had been committed to the Seminoles for more than a year. Four-star quarterback Skyler Mornhinweg, a former Penn State commitment, also switched his commitment to Florida just prior to signing day.
This type of thing happens all the time in college football, and this year will likely be no different.
The Gators are looking for help at defensive tackle, and Ole Miss commitment Darious Cummings just might be that guy. Junior Sharrif Floyd has had a solid junior year and he could end up heading to the NFL after the season. The Gators would be left with Dominique Easley, Leon Orr, Damien Jacobs and Quinteze Williams as the only scholarship defensive tackles.
Jacobs and Cummings were teammates last season at East Mississippi Community College and remain good friends.
Florida also has a commitment from tackle prospect Caleb Brantley (Crescent City, Fla./Crescent City) and defensive ends Joey Ivie (Dade City, Fla./Pasco) and Antonio Riles (Lawrenceville, Ga./Archer). With the size of Ivie and Riles, they could be candidates to move inside.
The 6-foot-3, 305-pound Cummings, who's originally from Titusville, Fla., will be taking his official visit to Florida this weekend. Cummings also holds offers from Arkansas, Texas A&M and Mississippi State. Cummings' East Mississippi teammate Jarran Reed, another defensive tackle prospect, recently received an offer from Florida and has shown interest in the Gators.
Cummings isn’t the only recruit with the potential to flip his commitment to Florida. Brentwood (Tenn.) Academy defensive back Jalen Ramsey, who has been committed to USC since July, has shown interest in the Gators and took an official visit for the Kentucky game.
The Gators are also pursuing Louisville (Ky.) Trinity defensive end Jason Hatcher. Like Ramsey, the ESPN 300 DE has been committed to USC since July. At this point, Ramsey and Hatcher are less likely to switch to Florida than Cummings, but it’s not out of the question.
The Gators aren’t immune to their own commitments switching pledges to other schools. Last year, four-star running back Mike Davis decommitted from Florida and signed with South Carolina. In 2011, cornerback Nick Waisome and linebacker Ryan Shazier, who had been committed to Florida for several months, switched to Florida State and Ohio State, respectively.
