ESPN 300 defensive lineman Jordan Sherit (Tampa, Fla./Hillsborough) will miss the rest of his senior season after suffering a torn ACL during a game against Tampa (Fla.) Jefferson on Friday.
Sherit, who committed to the Florida Gators in August, didn’t think the injury was serious after several inspections over the weekend, including one by Florida’s team doctors.
“I went to the Florida-LSU game and they were telling me that it didn’t appear to be anything serious,” Sherit said. “But I had an MRI on it Monday and that’s when I hear that I tore the ACL.”
Sherit said the injury came as he was running downfield chasing a play and was not the result of any contact.
“Just running like normal and I guess the weight distribution wasn’t right and my knee buckled,” Sherit added. “It’s frustrating but everything is going to be all right. I’m just upset I’ll miss the rest of this season.”
Sherit says he will have surgery in a couple of weeks and is looking at a six-month recovery period. The 6-foot-4, 237-pound senior said he spoke to Florida head coach Will Muschamp and defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, both of whom had words of encouragement.
“Both coaches got in touch with me and they said they are behind me 100 percent and just want me to get healthy so we can do great things over the next 4-5 years,” Sherit said. “They talked about Ronald Powell and how hard he’s working to come back from his injury.
“Overall I feel fine, I’m trying to look at this as a positive and I understand that everyone deals with adversity. I’m going to try to work harder than anyone has ever worked to recover from this. It’s just a small setback.”
If things go well with the surgery and rehabilitation, Sherit will still be able to fulfill one of his dreams and play on Florida Field in the 2013 Gators season opener.
“That’s my ultimate goal because it’s something I dreamed about,” Sherit said. “I’m going to be working towards full health and playing as a freshman in the Swamp.”
