Florida recruiting: weekend preview

9/7/2012

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida head coach Will Muschamp and offensive line coach Tim Davis were on hand to watch Florida wide receiver commit Chris Thompson and his Gainesville (Fla.) High School teammates defeat Lake City (Fla.) Columbia and their five-star offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil 17-14 on Thursday night.

The victory was bittersweet for Gainesville, however, as Thompson left the game early with a lower leg injury. There is no word yet how serious the injury is.

The Gainesville victory over Columbia was just the start to a packed weekend full of great games involving Florida commits. Here's a closer look at some of the games to keep an eye on this upcoming weekend.

Tampa (Fla.) Hillsborough at Cocoa (Fla.) HS -- Defensive end commit Jordan Sherit and his teammates will be trying to slow down the high-powered Cocoa offense, which is led by Tarean Folston, one of the top athletes in the country.

Delray Beach (Fla.) American Heritage at Seffner (Fla.) Armwood -- This game will feature three prospects -- Leon McQuay III, Alvin Bailey and Greg Bryant -- in the ESPN 150. Bailey, the latest Florida commit, will lead Armwood's high-powered offense against a stingy American Heritage defense. McQuay will try to slow down former Florida offensive line commit Rod Johnson and Bryant, the No. 2 running back in the country.

Tallahassee (Fla.) Lincoln vs St. Paul (Covington, La.) in New Orleans -- This Allstate Sugar Bowl Prep Classic matchup will feature two successful programs. Lincoln is led by Florida linebacker commit James Hearns and Georgia wide receiver commit Reggie Davis. St. Paul is led by senior offensive linemen Christian Voelkel and Stephen LeBlanc.

Bayside (Palm Bay, Fla.) vs. Jacksonville (Fla.) First Coast -- Florida linebacker commit Daniel McMillian's First Coast team will face off against Bayside and Florida 2014 defensive tackle commit Travonte Valentine. McMillian is the No. 3-ranked outside linebacker in the country.

Crescent City (Fla.) vs. St. Petersburg (Fla.) Catholic -- This game lost a little of its luster on Thursday when St. Petersburg Catholic running back and Florida State commit Ryan Green announced he would miss the remainder of his season with a shoulder injury. Green was set to face Florida defensive tackle commit Caleb Brantley. Looks like that matchup will have to wait until college.
