Gators awards tracker: Week 1

September, 4, 2012
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Here’s a recap of how Florida’s players on national award watch lists are faring this season:

LB Jon Bostic

Watch lists: College Football Performance Award Linebacker Trophy, Butkus Award, Rotary Lombardi

Last week’s stats: Eight tackles, one tackle for loss

Comment: Solid performance in season opener. The Gators’ leading tackler in 2011 starts the 2012 season on top.

FB Trey Burton

Watch list: CFPA Running Back Trophy

Last week’s stats: Two catches for 12 yards

Comment: Burton had little impact offensively against Bowling Green. He did commit a personal foul penalty, though.

P Kyle Christy

Watch list: CFPA Punter Trophy

Last week’s stats: Averaged 38.5 yards on four punts

Comment: Christy put two punts inside the 20 against the Falcons. His longest punt, however, was only 40 yards.

WR/KR Andre Debose

Watch lists: CFPA All-Purpose Trophy, CFPA Kickoff Returner Trophy, CFPA Wide Receiver Trophy, Biletnikoff

Last week’s stats: Averaged 15.0 yards on three punt returns and had one kickoff return for 38 yards

Comment: Debose nearly broke a punt and kickoff return for a TD. He made no impact on offense, though. He also committed a personal-foul penalty for hitting the Bowling Green punter out of bounds.

DE Dominique Easley

Watch list: Ted Hendricks Award

Last week’s stats: One tackle, one tackle for loss, one sack for minus-5 yards

Comment: Easley and the rest of the pass rushers had trouble getting to the quarterback on a consistent basis.

S Matt Elam

Watch lists: CFPA Defensive Back Trophy, Jim Thorpe Award, Bronko Nagurski Trophy

Last week’s stats: Two tackles

Comment: Elam was used as a blitzer several times. Bowling Green threw a lot of shorter passes, which didn’t allow him to make as much impact as he normally would.

DT Sharrif Floyd

Watch lists: Bednarik Award, Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Outland Trophy, Rotary Lombardi Award, Walter Camp Award

Last week’s stats: Four tackles

Comment: Solid day in his return to his natural position. He led all defensive linemen in tackles.

C Jonotthan Harrison

Watch list: Rimington Award

Last week’s stats: UF rushed for 220 yards

Comment: UF’s OL struggled in short-yardage situations. Have to improve there.

LB Jelani Jenkins

Watch lists: Butkus Award, Rotary Lombardi Award

Last week’s stats: Three tackles, one tackle for loss

Comment: Had really good coverage on pass into the end zone, too.

LB Lerentee McCray

Watch list: Butkus Award

Last week’s stats: Four tackles

Comment: Didn’t make much of an impact.

TE Jordan Reed

Watch lists: John Mackey Award, CFPA Tight End Trophy

Last week’s stats: Three catches, 33 yards

Comment: Reed tied for the team high in catches. He had a big catch on an early third down, but he also committed two false start penalties.

K Caleb Sturgis

Watch lists: CFPA Place-kicker Trophy, CFPA Specialist Trophy, Groza award

Last week’s stats: 2-for-3 on field goals, making kicks of 34 and 51 yards and missing a 27-yarder

Comment: Sturgis’ 51-yard field goal was the sixth field goal of 50 or more yards in his career. That’s a school record.
