GAINESVILLE, Fla.-- Friday Night Lights, Florida's marquee recruiting event is set for Friday night at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. The Gators will host several top prospects from all over the country. Here is a closer look at what to watch for on Friday night.
Four-star defensive end Demarcus Walker (Jacksonville, Fla./Sandalwood) will be making the short trip over from Jacksonville. The No. 24-ranked player in the country seems to be wavering back and forth between Alabama and Florida with signs pointing to Alabama as the frontrunner. The Gators will have the final chance to impress Walker, as he is scheduled to announce his decision on Aug. 3.
Will the Gators fill the last wide receiver spot?
This seems to be the big question surrounding Florida recruiting. The Gators have commitments from three wide receivers -- Ahmad Fulwood (Jacksonville, Fla./Bishop Kenny), Rodney Adams (St. Petersburg, Fla./Lakewood) and Marqui Hawkins (Columbus, Ga./Carver) -- but Florida is looking to add one more piece to the puzzle. Three-star wideout Chris Thompson (Gainesville, Fla./Gainesville) will try to impress at camp and earn an offer. It's still in question if four-star receiver Alvin Bailey (Seffner, Fla./Armwood) will make the trip to Gainesville. If he does, Bailey could very well earn a Florida offer. Four-star athlete Nadir Barnwell (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) will also try to impress the Florida coaches.
Underclassmen to watch
In addition to the talented 2013 prospects, there are several top 2014 prospects expected. Tight end/linebacker Vincent Jackson (Tampa, Fla./Jesuit), defensive tackle Demarcus Christmas (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee), defensive tackle Travonte Valentine (Palm Bay, Fla./Bayside), Georgia commits Demarre Kitt (Fayettville, Ga./Sandy Creek) and Nick Glass (Atlanta/Saint Pius Catholic), recent Florida State commit Jake McCary (Miami/Coral Reef), defensive tackle Keiwan Jones (Dunnellon, Fla./Dunnellon), safety Darrion Owens (Orange Park, Fla./Oakleaf), offensive lineman Reilly Gibbons (St. Petersburg, Fla./St. Pete Catholic) and defensive back Brandon Powell (Deerfield Beach, Fla./Deerfield) are just some of the many 2014 prospects expected in attendance. This could be a huge opportunity for the Gators to get off to hot start for the 2014 class.
Will Florida get a commitment?
After the announcement that A.C. Leonard would tranfer, Florida's need for a tight end became very evident. Jordan Davis (Thomson, Ga./Thomson) is the obvious choice. Davis will be at Florida on Thursday and is expected to visit Georgia sometime this weekend as well. It's hard to say if he will commit or wait until early next week before making a decision. There are several 2014 prospects who are on the verge of making pledges and the Gators very well could make a big splash at Friday Night Lights. This could be a very successful event for UF.
Surprise committed player visiting?
There is a chance a four-star player committed to another school could make the trip to Florida. This player was strongly considering the Gators before committing elsewhere. If he does make the trip, things could get very interesting for this prospect.
