There are six or seven spots left in Florida's 2013 class and a few needs to fill. Some of the top prospects in the nation are considering the Gators, and it would be difficult to turn them away. So GatorNation is ranking the top 12 uncommitted prospects for Florida this week, two-a-day. We’ll also add comments by some of our Insider subscribers from The Chompions Club premium message board.
Derek Tyson's pick: DT Joey Ivie (Dade City, Fla./Pasco)
Ivie's recruitment has dramatically increased over the last month. Ivie has picked up offers from Florida, Florida State, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Miami, USF and West Virginia. The Gators have only one defensive tackle commit from Caleb Brantley (Crescent City, Fla./Crescent City), and Ivie (6-foot-4, 271 pounds) could add another physical presence in the middle of the Florida defense.
Ivie said he will look to make a decision by the end of summer. The Gators appear to be in good shape for the big tackle prospect.
Jeff Barlis’ pick: TE Josh McNeil (Durham, N.C./Hillside)
Last fall, McNeil gave an early commitment to East Carolina, the first school to offer him. Now he's a BCS-level prospect. One could hardly blame the young man for not understanding the recruiting game and making a pledge too early, however, because he's been on a whirlwind in the last year. McNeil committed while playing his first season of football last fall. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound rising senior grew up playing basketball and is now learning the tight end position. It's a trend in football to convert long, lean athletes who have good hands and know how to post up defenders.
Florida is well-stocked at the tight end position with capable starter Jordan Reed, A.C. Leonard offering tantalizing potential and two touted true freshmen soon to arrive in big blocker Colin Thompson and smooth, lanky Kent Taylor. It may not be the Gators' highest priority to reel in another, but it would be hard to pass on McNeil, who has the size to be a well-rounded starter someday. Now that his recruitment is wide open, McNeil is weighing offers from Florida, Alabama, Clemson and Georgia among many others.
Readers’ pick: DE/LB Jordan Sherit (Tampa, Fla./Hillsborough)
dukeoden - Like the motor, and we need more guys like him at the buck position with relentless activity on the defense.
DK_Thompson - Sherit is quick for his size and is great in pursuit. Needs to improve his weight and strength, but could make for a great DE at the next level.
chris smith 24 - Need depth at the buck, and he would fit that position nicely.
kendallland1 - Need to stack up the DL.
secrocks2000 - Big and physical and has the ability to be a good weak-side DE or buck on defense. Quick off the ball and has a good motor and good in pursuit.
scooterp518663 - DL depth. He can line up anywhere.
