GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Florida Gators signed one of the top cornerback prospects in the country last year in Brian Poole (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast) but also lost out on Tracy Howard (Miramar, Fla./Miramar), another top corner prospect.
With Poole joining Marcus Roberson, Cody Riggs, Jaylen Watkins and Loucheiz Purifoy, the Gators will have depth and experience at the cornerback position.
Florida can be selective on who it wants to take for the 2013 class, and there are a few very talented prospects in the state of Florida this year.
Prospects: Vernon Hargreaves III (Tampa, Fla./Wharton), Mackensie Alexander (Immokalee, Fla./Immokalee), Priest Willis (Tempe, Ariz./Marcos De Niza HS), Adrian Baker (Hallandale, Fla./Chaminade-Madonna Prep), Tre' Bell (Jersey City, N.J./St. Peters Prep), Kendall Fuller (Olney, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel)
Overview: Florida offered Adrian Baker a scholarship on Tuesday. Baker said the offer moves Florida right near the top of his list.
"The Florida offer means a lot to me," Baker said. "UF is a great school has great tradition and also a winning culture. I don't have a leader but I have a top two of Florida and Florida State. I'll probably make my decision on my birthday Sept. 13."
Vernon Hargreaves III might be the top prospect on Florida's board. Hargreaves said in this recent update that though he remains open, that Florida will be one of his top schools.
"Florida is close to the top I guess," Hargreaves said. "I like Florida. I like their coaching staff. I met some of their players and they said, 'We work hard on the field and off the field we joke around and we'll play XBox, but on the field it's all business and we want to win games.' "
Alexander recently visited the Gators with his family and everything appeared to go well. The former Tennessee commit said he is now wide open, but Florida will be in his top schools when he begins to narrow things down. Alexander has a twin brother who also plays football. It remains to be seen how much his brother's recruitment affects Mackensie's choice.
Bell is scheduled to visit Florida for the spring game, and Willis said he also plans to travel to Gainesville in the spring or summer.
With the depth and talent Florida already has at the position, look for the Gators to sign one or two corner prospects in this class.
