After Florida visit, McCord names a leader

11/27/2011

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Four-star defensive end Tyriq McCord (6-3/220, Tampa, Fla./Jefferson) visited The Swamp Saturday to watch Florida State beat in-state rival Florida 21-7.

McCord, who is ranked the No. 99 player in the country according to the ESPNU 150, said he enjoyed his time in Gainesville.

“The visit went pretty well,” McCord said. “That was a tough hard-fought defensive game. I’m not even looking at FSU, but it was great to see both teams go at it like that.”

McCord said the outcome of the game doesn’t affect his decision.

“I don’t look too much at who won or lost,” he said. “I know that anywhere that I go to school, there will be competition against some of the top programs in the country.”

McCord said his decision will come down to the relationships he has with players and coaches. He didn’t get a chance to meet with Florida coaches Saturday because he was late arriving to the game. The Gator players may be another story.

So after his unofficial visit to Florida, what is McCord’s status?

“South Carolina is my leader and Florida would be in second right now,” McCord said. “I just feel like I have a better relationship with the players on the team at South Carolina and Miami and USC for that matter. It’s just different with those other schools. I mean I’ve talked to Ronald Powell before, but that’s pretty much it.”

McCord said he is planning to make his final decision at the U.S. Army Bowl in San Antonio on Jan. 7.
