When the baton was passed between Florida head coach Will Muschamp and his predecessor, Urban Meyer, the two spent a lot of time together and found a vast expanse of common ground.

Maybe that's why on Saturday Muschamp felt comfortable weighing in on the rumors surrounding Meyer that he has accepted the job to be Ohio State's next head coach.

After his Gators struggled to beat FCS Furman on Saturday, Muschamp said he would be surprised to see Meyer get back into coaching so soon after retiring.

"I think it would be great for college football," Muschamp said. "I think Urban is an outstanding football coach who does it the right way. He did a phenomenal job at Bowling Green and Utah and obviously here at Florida. And just a first-class guy.

"But with his deteriorating health there and his family, as important as that is to him, I wouldn’t think he would. Again, that’s just my opinion."

ESPN.com reported on Saturday that Meyer has talked to Ohio State about becoming the school's next head coach, according to sources close to Meyer and Ohio State.

Meyer addressed the rumors from the broadcast booth of the Nebraska-Michigan game on Saturday, saying "there's no truth to that."

"I know it's that time of year. I've not been offered any job, and I've certainly not accepted any job," Meyer said.

Meanwhile back in Gainesville, Fla., one of Meyer's former players, defensive tackle Omar Hunter, said he thinks Meyer will return to the sidelines.

"I know he loves the game," Hunter said. "I think when it's the right opportunity and the right place for him, he'll come back and coach. Given all his health issues, when he gets that straightened out, he'll be back."
