UF cashes in on few turnovers forced

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- With Florida on pace to end up with the fewest forced turnovers in program history, all the attention is rightly on why the Gators couldn't force more and what they can do to improve in that area in 2012.

Nearly overlooked, however, is the fact that the Gators have been very good at capitalizing when they do force a turnover. Which drives the point home about the importance of getting turnovers.

UF forced only 12 turnovers (16 in 1950 is the fewest) and scored points off all but two: seven touchdowns, three field goals, one punt and one end-of-game situation. That's 58 points, including a pair of interception returns for touchdowns against Furman.

That stat makes it even more imperative the Gators figure out a way to force more turnovers in 2012.

"For us in terms of getting the football and takeaways, it was such a huge emphasis for us," defensive coordinator Dan Quinn said. "That was certainly one that we know goes along with winning football that we've got to do a better job at."

Here's a look at UF's 12 turnovers this season:

UAB: Marcus Roberson fumble recovery leads to a touchdown.
Tennessee: Josh Evans interception leads to a field goal.
Tennessee: Matt Elam interception comes at end of game.
Kentucky: Omar Hunter fumble recovery leads to a touchdown.
Kentucky: Elam interception leads to a touchdown.
Kentucky: Jaye Howard fumble recovery returned 1 yard for a touchdown.
Kentucky: Michael Tayler interception leads to a field goal.
Georgia: Roberson interception leads to a punt.
South Carolina: De'Ante Saunders interception leads to a field goal.
Furman: Saunders interception returned 25 yards for a touchdown.
Furman: Jelani Jenkins interception returned 75 yards for a touchdown.
Florida State: Howard fumble recovery leads to a touchdown.
