Wesley Green on UGA, UF, FSU, Bama

DECATUR, Ga. -- Wesley Green was not exactly bored Friday night as his Martin Luther King (Ga.) Lions beat an outgunned but scrappy Arabia Mountain (Ga.) High School team 24-6 at Panthersville Stadium. The opposing quarterback, Trevous Reynolds, didn’t throw much in Green's direction, despite Green’s best efforts at playing possum.

“I didn’t get to do anything,” Green said. “I mean I tried. I wanted him to come to my side. I baited him a lot. He just didn’t throw the ball.”

It was a scene that plays out often as district coaches examine film on the ESPN Watch List cornerback and adjust their game plans accordingly.

Gators are off, but plenty to watch today

September, 29, 2012

AM ET
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida may have the day off, but there are still plenty of things happening today that can impact the Gators throughout the rest of the Southeastern Conference season.

Four future SEC opponents are in action, including next week’s foe LSU. Here’s a breakdown of what the Gators and their fans should pay attention to in each game:

Tennessee (3-1, 0-1 SEC) at Georgia (4-0, 2-0), 3:30 p.m.

It appears the Bulldogs will be at full strength on defense for the first time this season because all indications are that All-American S Bacarri Rambo and starting LB Alec Ogletree will make their season debuts. The two had been suspended for the first four games of the season for violating team and university rules.

Georgia has looked pretty good defensively without those two anyway, ranking eighth in the SEC in total defense (343.2 yards per game), eighth in rush defense (135.5 ypg) and sixth in pass defense (207.8 ypg). But adding Ogletree to a linebacking corps that includes Jarvis Jones (4.5 sacks) gives the Bulldogs more big-play potential.

Rambo’s return means Sanders Commings, who along with LB Chase Vasser was suspended for the first two games, can go back to his cornerback spot. Those guys will have several games to get up to speed before the Florida-Georgia game on Oct. 27.

New Bama commit Henry has big night

YULEE, Fla. -- After committing to the Alabama Crimson Tide earlier in the day, four-star running back Derrick Henry capped off his exciting day by helping his Yulee (Fla.) team defeat Kelvin Taylor and his Belle Glade (Fla.) Glades Day team 42-6 on Friday night. The 6-foot-3, 243-pound Henry rushed for 362 yards and six touchdowns on 35 carries.

Henry has amassed 864 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns over the last two weeks and now has 1,753 yards and 24 rushing touchdowns in only five games this season. He has totaled 9,617 rushing yards in his career and is on pace to break Ken Hall's (Sugarland, Texas) national career rushing record of 11,232 yards. If he continues his current pace, Henry will finish the regular season wih 3,506 rushing yards and 48 touchdowns.

In addition to the career rushing record, Henry has his sights set on yet another rushing record. Former NFL player Travis Henry (Frostproof, Fla./Frostproof) holds the single-season rushing record in Florida with 4,087 yards in 14 games. If Yulee (4-1) makes a playoff run, Derrick Henry has a good chance at breaking Travis Henry's record.

Kyle Koehne's versatility helps Gators

September, 28, 2012

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Trey Burton gets all the publicity for playing multiple positions on offense, but he’s not the only Florida player who can do that.

Kyle Koehne can play all five positions along the offensive line. He has mainly worked inside at guard since he came to Florida in 2009 but has started at right tackle in the Gators’ past two games because of Chaz Green’s ankle injury.

"My mindset is just if I can play, put me in wherever," Koehne said. "Learning each position has been a good opportunity and has helped me understand the offense as a whole and I think it’s only benefited me.

Koehne saw limited snaps at tackle and guard as a redshirt freshman in 2010. He played in every game last season and made his first career start against Furman at left guard. He has taken reps at one time or another at every spot along the line.

In the 6-foot-5, 311-pound Koehne’s two starts this season, the Gators have given up only three sacks and have run for 536 yards. He’s still not completely at ease at tackle, though.

Gators get jump on 2014 ESPN Watch List

September, 27, 2012

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Gators are currently holding down the No. 3-ranked recruiting class in the country for the 2013 class and have just a handful of spots remaining. Florida has also given its attention to a loaded 2014 class. With the talent in Florida next year, there will be plenty of prospects to chose from.

The state of Florida has an impressive 53 players on the ESPN Watch List. The Gators already have commitments from two players, defensive tackle Travonte Valentine (Palm Bay, Fla./Bayside) and wide receiver Ryeshene Bronson (Ft. Myers, Fla./Dunbar), and are heavily involved with several other top in-state prospects.

In addition to Bronson, the Gators are hoping to add a few more wide receivers from this list, and there are several good ones to chose from. Artavis Scott (Tarpon Springs, Fla./East Lake) and Johnnie Dixon (Palm Beach, Fla./Dwyer) are two of the top prospects on Florida's wide receiver board, but Corey Holmes (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas), FSU commit Jake McCary (Miami/Coral Reef) and Trevion Thompson (Durham, N.C./Hillside) are also in the mix.

Florida home to 53 Watch List recruits

There are several things that stand out about the 53 2014 prospects from Florida included on the ESPN Watch List.

Right away it’s easy to see that Florida State has gotten off to a good head start in recruiting for its 2014 class. The commitments of running back Joseph Yearby (Miami/Miami Central) and wide receivers Jake McCrary (Miami/Coral Reef) and J.C. Jackson (Immokalee, Fla./Immokalee) give the Seminoles three future game-changers on offense.

Looking deeper into the class of 2014, there should be a good group of quarterback prospects in the state. Quinton Flowers (Miami/Miami Jackson) might be the state’s most exciting player at the position since Teddy Bridgewater. The questions about Flowers’ size (6-foot, 170 pounds) are legitimate, but no one can question how dynamic he is with the ball in his hands.

2014 Kyle Gibson hears from state schools

Class of 2014 defensive back Kyle Gibson (Seffner, Fla./Armwood) is still sitting on early offers from UCF and Vanderbilt.

However, recruitment for the 6-foot-1, 190-pound junior has picked up considerably in the last month.

“Everything's going real well in the recruiting area,” Gibson said. “A coach from Notre Dame stopped by (Wednesday) to get film. They have been showing a lot of interest but no offer yet.”

Shaw draws interest in and out of state

Please excuse class of 2014 athlete Rashawn Shaw (Fort Pierce, Fla./Central) if he can’t think much beyond his big game against Vero Beach (Fla.) on Thursday.

"So far the season is going real well and we'll be facing Vero Beach (on Thursday),” Shaw said. “The game is going to be streaming on the Internet I believe. It should be a fun game.”

This year Shaw has been getting bigger -- he said Florida coaches measured him at 6-foot-2, 227 pounds -- and making several trips around the state.

UF's punt and kickoff returns need work

September, 27, 2012

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida coach Will Muschamp isn’t particularly happy with what he’s getting out of his kickoff and punt return units, so he made sure the Gators worked on the return game on Tuesday and Wednesday.

[+] Enlarge
Andre Debose
Kim Klement/US PresswireDespite uneven practice effort, Andre Debose has not lost his job as Florida's primary kick and punt returner.
The biggest issue is that No. 11-ranked Florida (4-0, 3-0 SEC) isn’t blocking very well on punt or kickoff returns and that’s why the Gators aren’t making big plays on either unit.

"We need to get more production out of our punt return group," Muschamp said. "We've got some explosive guys. We need to settle on a guy and get a guy back there that's No. 1 going to field the ball, but No. 2, can get the ball north and south. Stick your foot in the ground and get north and south.

"And then more production out of our kickoff return unit. Again we've got some guys that got some ability, some explosive ability. We've got to do a better job of blocking, staying on blocks."

Florida ranks 13th in the 14-team SEC on kickoff returns (19.5 yards per return). UF has only eight returns, but Auburn leads the league at 31.5 yards per game on eight returns. The Gators are sixth in the SEC in punt returns (9.6 yards per return), but there have been opportunities for more yards and bigger plays if the punt returners were more confident in fielding the ball.

Andre Debose and Marcus Roberson have let several punts drop and roll that should have been fielded. Even if those kicks were fair caught and there was no return, that still would have saved the Gators yardage.

"We need to field the ball," Muschamp said. "We’re losing precious yards there as far as the ball rolling and bleeding out on us. It’s about field position and securing the football."

Debose ranks sixth in the SEC in punt returns (9.6 per return) and had a 32-yard return against Bowling Green. He’s eighth in kickoff returns (24.2 yards per return). Though he has been inconsistent in practice on offense and did not field any kicks in the first half of last week’s game against Kentucky and fumbled and recovered a punt in the second half, Muschamp said Debose hasn’t lost his job as the Gators’ main kick and punt returner.

"He’s got to field the ball a little bit better on punts, but other than that he’d be fine," Muschamp said. "If we were going to play tomorrow he’d be back there catching punts."

Big month left for ESPN 150 DT Gilmore

We've already seen that the Sept. 22 visit to Florida went about as well as possible for defensive tackle Greg Gilmore (Hope Mills, N.C./South View).

Gilmore took an official visit to see the Gators paste Kentucky, 38-0, and came out quite impressed with Florida -- which, along with LSU, is one of his two leaders.

"I think the two teams are pretty even," he said after the visit. "I love both teams, I can't lie to you. Both teams are on the rise."

Jelani Jenkins could return for LSU game

September, 26, 2012

PM ET
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- It looks like Florida linebacker Jelani Jenkins could be back on the field for the Gators’ game against LSU on Oct. 6.

UF coach Will Muschamp said Wednesday that Jenkins will see a specialist on Friday and have the surgical pin removed from his fractured right thumb. If Jenkins is cleared, then he could play against the Tigers with a cast on his hand.

"That goes back to pain level and comfort level of playing with a cast," Muschamp said. "Right now we feel like he should be able to go, but again you never know until the guy looks at it, so I don’t want to sit there and say he’s going right now. I’m not ready to say that."

Jenkins fractured his thumb against Texas A&M on Sept. 8 and hasn’t played since. Muschamp said Jenkins was cleared last week to resume weight-lifting and running.

ESPN 150 CB Ramsey talks UF visit

ESPN 150 cornerback Jalen Ramsey (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood Academy) committed to USC in July, but that hasn’t stopped him from taking other visits. He took his first official visit to Florida during the weekend for the Kentucky game.

“It went good,” Ramsey said. “It was a good visit. It was my first official, so it was official-like. I liked the coaching staff. It was just a good environment. I liked the fans. It was fun getting to hang with some of the players and just watching some football.”

After his visit to Florida, the USC coaches called to see how the trip went, but Ramsey said it was nothing more than the weekly call he shares with the staff.

Muschamp to Jones: No time for dancing

September, 26, 2012
9/26/12
8:03
AM ET
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Matt Jones came to Florida in July as one of the nation's top running back recruits, but through the Gators' first three games he didn't look like it.

The 6-foot-2, 213-pound running back had gained just 36 yards on 13 carries against Bowling Green, Texas A&M and Tennessee. Nobody was expecting him to unseat senior Mike Gillislee as Florida's feature back, but they were expecting more than 2.8 yards per carry.

That's why UF coach Will Muschamp spent a couple of minutes with Jones before the Gators' game last Saturday against Kentucky. Muschamp's message was pretty short: Stop jitterbugging and trying to go 80 yards on every play and just start running.

USC commit Jalen Ramsey enjoys UF trip

USC cornerback commit Jalen Ramsey (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood Academy) had a good time on his official visit to Florida this past weekend but remains fully committed to the Trojans, his father Lamont said via text message Monday.

"Jalen's UF visit was good, like most visits," Lamont Ramsey said. "It's what you expect; good people, good facilities, good academics, hot weather and good fans. He's still USC and he stays in contact with them. He's not getting any pressure from family to stay close to home, we're going to support him no matter where he goes. He's going to pick the place he feels is best for him athletically, academically and socially (short and long term)."

The four-star cornerback, ranked No. 7 in his position for the class of 2013, had hoped to take his official visit to Los Angeles the weekend of Nov. 2 when USC hosts Oregon in a pivotal Pac-12 Conference game, but he is scheduled to take the SAT that Saturday.
