Alabama Crimson Tide: Jalen Ramsey

When it comes to recruiting, the readers believe it's still Alabama's world.

Florida might be No. 1 in ESPN's class rankings, but with more than 7,100 votes cast in our SportsNation poll, Alabama was picked to take home the recruiting class crown by grabbing 40 percent of the vote. Alabama currently has the No. 2 class, with 22 commits (10 ESPN 150 members).

Alabama has a chance to add to its already impressive class with a handful of ESPN 150 members still heavily considering the Crimson Tide, including top middle linebacker Reuben Foster, safety Antonio Conner, defensive tackle Dee Liner and running back Alvin Kamara. Adding a couple of those names might propel the Tide over Florida.

The Gators were third in our poll, as Texas collected 27 percent of the vote to come in second. The Aggies have the nation's No. 7 recruiting class and 32 commitments. A&M has six ESPN 150 members and is hoping to add to that number Wednesday with cornerback Mackensie Alexander and athlete Levonte Whitfield still in the mix.

Florida collected 18 percent. While the Gators would like to add to their class, the headliners might already be in hand. The Gators have a good shot of landing four-star cornerback Jalen Ramsey. He's ranked No. 14 nationally by ESPN recruiting services and is the top remaining prospect on the Gators' board.

Georgia was fourth with 10 percent of the vote, while LSU grabbed 5 percent. The Bulldogs could have a very exciting signing day with Foster, Kamara, Liner, top offensive lineman Laremy Tunsil and stud defensive lineman Montravius Adams still looking at Georgia. Landing a few those big names would shoot the Dawgs up the ranks, for sure.

LSU might not have a very exciting signing day. The Tigers own the nation's No. 6 class, with 26 commitments (six ESPN 150 members), but it looks like the staff is waiting on No. 1 Robert Nkemdiche and Auburn defensive end commit Tashawn Bower. Ole Miss is way ahead for Nkemdiche, while it could be tough to flip Bower.

SAN ANTONIO -- ESPN 150 cornerback Jalen Ramsey (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood Academy) has been committed to USC since July 16, but a lot has changed with the Trojans since then.

Tennessee is working hard to get back in the race for ESPN 150 cornerback and USC Trojans commit Jalen Ramsey (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood Academy). Apparently, it's going to take a lot more work.

The Volunteers have put the hard press on the No. 1 prospect in the state. Ramsey said he has spoken to new UT coach Butch Jones, running backs coach Jay Graham, defensive coordinator Willie Martinez and tight ends coach Mark Elder since the group was hired this month.

Jones was hired to replace Derek Dooley, who was fired after the 2012 season, and Dooley never had a strong connection with Ramsey. Unlike Dooley, Jones has a history of success at various programs.

Five-star visitor

Alabama is set to host the biggest recruiting weekend of the season for Saturday’s Texas A&M game. Prospects from all over are making their way to Tuscaloosa, maybe none bigger than five-star offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil. The nation’s No. 1 tackle is visiting with friends and fellow Florida natives Derrick Henry and DeMarcus Walker, both of whom are already committed to the Tide. Tunsil is thought to be favoring Alabama and Georgia, and a positive visit this weekend could push the Tide to the top. He’s still expected to take his official visit to UA after the season, and he doesn’t plan to make a decision until signing day. The 6-foot-6, 295-pound offensive lineman is a top priority for Alabama.

UA visits Foster

Alabama is looking to add another wide receiver in this class, and the top option is still ESPN 150 star Robert Foster (Monaco, Pa./Central Valley). The Tide made it clear that he was a priority when UA assistant coach Mike Groh traveled up to Pennsylvania over the weekend to pay him a visit. According to Central Valley head coach Mark Lyons, Groh spent the day with Foster at school, took in his game that night, and the two grabbed a bite to eat afterwards. At this point, Foster is considering Alabama, Ohio State and Pittsburgh and plans to take official visits to all three schools before he makes a decision. Distance is not thought to be a major factor in Foster’s decision.

Decision day

The day has finally come. After pushing it back and pushing it back again, ESPN 150 athlete Derrick Henry will announce his college decision Friday at 3 p.m. EST from his high school in Yulee, Fla. He will choose between Alabama and Tennessee. Henry, who originally committed to Georgia last summer, nearly pushed the decision back even further because he wanted to visit Athens, Ga., one last time. However, after taking his official visit to Alabama over the weekend, he decided he was ready to pull the trigger. That has to bode well for Crimson Tide fans, along with the fact that UA has been his leader since he visited Tuscaloosa over the summer. Henry will play on ESPNU the same night against Florida running back commitment Kelvin Taylor.

ESPN 150 cornerback Jalen Ramsey (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood Academy) committed to USC in July, but that hasn’t stopped him from taking other visits. He took his first official visit to Florida during the weekend for the Kentucky game.

“It went good,” Ramsey said. “It was a good visit. It was my first official, so it was official-like. I liked the coaching staff. It was just a good environment. I liked the fans. It was fun getting to hang with some of the players and just watching some football.”

When you have over 25 scholarship offers, a new one may not seem like that big of a deal.

But when the national champions call and offer, that is sure to grab any recruit’s attention.

Such was the case when the University of Alabama called and offered Brentwood (Tenn.) Academy athlete Jalen Ramsey last week.
