Introducing the class: DeMarcus Walker

By Greg Ostendorf

Editor's note: This is the first installment in a series that introduces Alabama's 2013 recruiting class.

In August, ESPN 150 defensive end DeMarcus Walker committed to Alabama in front of millions on national TV. He chose the Crimson Tide over offers from Auburn, Florida, LSU, USC and many others. Since his commitment, he's trimmed his weight in an effort to play the Jack linebacker position. He plans to participate in the Under Armour All-America Game next month and will enroll early at UA.

Q: What made you commit to Alabama?

A: I felt comfortable with that school to help me academically and football, also.

Q: What’s life been like since your commitment?

A: It’s been kind of crazy. A lot of people come up to me from all different ways. It’s been fun, also, with the fan base showing me love.

Q: When did you first meet Coach Saban? What was that like?

A: It was the first junior day of 2012. It was pretty good. It was cool to meet him, to sit there across from him and talk to him, just bond with him. I was a little intimidated.

Q: What’s your favorite Alabama memory to this point?

A: Against LSU, when T.J. [Yeldon] had scored on that last drive. I was at Sneakers watching it. T.J. caught the ball and as soon as he passed 10 yards, I knew it was over. Everybody started screaming. I was jumping up and down from my seat, almost knocked over a table. It was amazing.

Q: What’s your goal when you get to Alabama?

A: To learn the system, adapt, maintain my weight, be disciplined and make an impact early academically and athletically.

Q: Do you have a favorite play or memory from high school?

A: It was my sophomore year, and we were playing Ocala Forest. If we beat them, we would be going to the playoffs. If we lose, we were pretty much done. They had us beat 20-0 going to halftime, and we came back. The score was 41-40 in overtime. They scored and they were going for two to end the game. They brought in two fullbacks and a tailback, but I surged through the line and made a game-winning tackle. We won the game and went to the playoffs.
