Watch List CB Humphrey talks Iron Bowl

By Greg Ostendorf

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- ESPN Watch List cornerback Marlon Humphrey (Hoover, Ala./Hoover) is one of the state’s best for 2014, so it was no surprise that he attended this year’s Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa on Saturday. Alabama dominated its in-state rival, 49-0.

“It was a pretty good visit, Humphrey said. “It was not as good of a game as I would’ve like to have seen, but I had a real good visit, seeing the guys, catching up. It was a great atmosphere to be around, so I enjoyed it.”

The day after the game, Auburn fired head coach Gene Chizik just two years removed from winning a national championship. The news came as a bit of a surprise to Humphrey.

“I had heard stuff about it, but I just know the guy won a national championship for them,” he said. “To see him go down like that, it couldn’t have been a good day.”

Humphrey plans to see Alabama play again this Saturday, as the Tide travel to Atlanta for the SEC title game, where they will face No. 3 Georgia. The winner earns a ticket to the BCS championship and a date with Notre Dame.

The junior defensive back is not sure who is going to come out on top this weekend.

“I’m not really sure because it’s two pretty strong teams,” Humphrey said. “I guess we will have to see. I’m actually going to that game. Me and my family, we’ve gone to the SEC championship for probably eight years in a row now. It should be a good game to watch.”

First things first, Humphrey has some business to take care of on the field this Friday night. Hoover is set to host Clay-Chalkville in a battle of No. 1 vs. No. 3 in the AHSAA Class 6A semifinals.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” Humphrey said. “They like to throw the ball. They have tall wide receivers, fast guys, so I think it’s going to be a real good game for us and them. Hopefully, the better team wins.”
