Statistical breakdown: Texas A&M-Alabama

By Alex Scarborough and ESPN Stats and Information

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- With No. 1 Alabama's matchup against No. 15 Texas A&M on the horizon, let's take a look at the two schools with a fine-tooth comb.

With the help of the ESPN Stats and Information Department, we broke down three keys to the game:

1. Running wild

• Alabama runs downhill with 68.3 percent of their designed running plays coming between the tackles in SEC games. The Tide average 6.4 yards per carry on such running plays with about one in every 4.5 attempts going for at least 10 yards.

2. Comparing the QBs

Note: Manziel has gained 634 of his SEC-leading 922 rush yards on scrambles. That is 182 more yards scrambling than Denard RobinsonBraxton Miller and Collin Klein have combined. Manziel has scrambled for 28 first downs this season, including 18 first downs on third down.

Note: All seven touchdowns caught by different receivers.
Note: Manziel has thrown three of his six interceptions this season on passes thrown 25 yards or longer. In Texas A&M’s two losses, Manziel completed 1 of 5 such passes with no touchdowns and an interception.

3. Comparing the defenses

Note: Alabama leads the FBS in scoring defense for the second straight season. The Tide do not allow big plays. They have conceded 65 plays that gained 10 yards or more, four fewer than any other FBS team. They are giving up just 3.8 yards per play, and 2.1 yards per rush. Both are the second lowest in FBS.
