Fast-rising 2015 DT visits Alabama
By Greg Ostendorf
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Defensive tackle Daron Payne (Birmingham, Ala./Shades Valley) is quickly becoming one of the state’s top players for 2015. Last Friday, he took his first visit of the spring and made the short trip down to the University of Alabama.
“I liked it a lot,” Payne said. “When I was up there I talked to most of the academic people and I got to see a couple workouts. I see why they’re good. They work out hard.
“I talked to some of the coaches. I talked to Kirby Smart, the defensive line coach and I got to talk to [Nick] Saban. He was telling me how he can make me more than a better football player, he can make me a better person. He was talking about how if I played there, I would graduate and more than likely get a degree.”
During his visit, Payne measured in at 6-foot-3, 318 pounds. The staff likes him on the defensive line, preferably as a three-technique. He plans to return to Tuscaloosa this weekend for the Crimson Tide’s OL/DL camp.
“I’m ready for the competition,” he said.
Payne also wants to visit Auburn before the end of the month. Both in-state schools have already offered the rising junior, and he also holds offers from Mississippi State, Ole Miss, South Alabama and South Carolina. He plans to wait until the beginning of his senior season before he makes a decision.
