Q&A: Evans breaks down Bama's camp

By Greg Ostendorf

AUBURN, Ala. -- Four-star linebacker Rashaan Evans (Auburn, Ala./Auburn) had all but narrowed his list to four schools -- Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee and UCLA -- but that was before Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart called and invited him to camp last week.

The 6-foot-3, 211-pound Evans made the trip to Tuscaloosa last Monday to take part in the camp and show the coaches what he could do. It was first time on campus since visiting Alabama for a junior day in January.

Evans broke down his trip:

TideNation: How’d the camp at Alabama go last week?

Rashaan Evans: It went really good. It was hard. I’m telling you, I was winded. I was on my knees. It was crazy. But the Alabama camp, it went pretty well. I definitely worked out pretty hard. I didn’t know it was going to be that bad to be honest with you. It was so fast-paced, but I enjoyed it.

TN: Rumor is you went up against Cameron Robinson, the nation’s No. 1 offensive tackle. Was that a little intimidating?

Evans: Actually, it was. I knew of him, but I’d never seen him play or anything like that. As soon as I saw him, I was like this guy’s huge. To be honest with you, I just went after it. I didn’t think about it. I just tried to do my best to try to get by him. That’s all I could do.

TN: How’d you fare against him?

Evans: I think I did pretty good. Going up against offensive linemen of that caliber, it kind of tells you where you’re at as far as your talent and your ability. I think I fared pretty well against him.

TN: What were the Alabama coaches telling you after the camp?

Evans: Most of the speculation was on me standing up and running. That was the question. That was the reason that I went to the camp -- just to show them that I could run and that I could do what linebackers do other than just put my hand in the dirt. That’s pretty much what I did. I went over there, showed them my stuff, and they seemed like they were pretty impressed with it.

TN: So where do they see you fitting in with their defense?

Evans: They want me to play the Jack linebacker spot. They definitely think that I can play that position and fill that role if I were to go there. They’ve been telling me after the camp that they were very interested in me. They want to continue to keep in contact with me and just develop a relationship.

TN: Does that change anything in your recruitment?

Evans: It changes it a little bit, just the fact that they contacted me and told me to come over there. They were honest with me about why they haven’t been coming at me as hard. They were straight-forward with it. That’s all I can ask for. That’s the reason I went up there, to show them a little bit. They saw it, so now I guess everything is a go.

TN: Who is still in the mix?

Evans: Auburn, Alabama, UCLA, Tennessee and Georgia. That’s the only teams that have been contacting me.

TN: When do you want to make a decision?

Evans: I definitely want to try to commit during my season. That’s what I’m aiming for right now. Once I take these visits, I’ll pretty much be for sure where I want to go.
