Q&A: ESPN 150 DT Shaw on new offers

By Max Olson

Elisha Shaw (Tucker, Ga./Tucker) already holds offers from Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Ohio State and a handful of other big-time programs, so he wasn’t surprised to get a new offer on Monday.

He was surprised, however, that it came from Texas. The ESPN 150 defensive tackle met with Texas offensive line coach Stacy Searels on Monday and could look into checking out what the Longhorns have to offer this summer.

Here’s the latest on Shaw’s recruitment, including which team is currently the leader for the No. 4 defensive tackle in the country.

ESPN 150 defensive tackle Elisha Shaw said Alabama is his top school.
HornsNation: You picked up an offer from Texas. How do you feel about that?

Elisha Shaw: I feel real good. You know, I didn’t really expect it. This is the first time in awhile they’ve come down to my school or come out here, period. I wasn’t that surprised, but hey, it happens.

HN: Stacy Searels came by your school and has history out there as a former assistant coach at Georgia. What did you think of him?

Shaw: He seemed nice. I really don’t know much about him. I’ll be checking him out, though. I really just said hello and talked to him a little bit, and then my coach told me I got an offer.

HN: Is Texas a school you ever thought about or looked into?

Shaw: Uh, not really but I’m going to look into it. He told me I’ve got to come out there. I’m going to look into it and try to take a visit out there. He told me they’re going to have a big camp on June 2. It’s a possibility.

HN: How would you say your recruiting process is going thus far?

Shaw: It’s going great. I just got offers from Louisville, Texas and Miami in the past two days. I’ve been working out and trying to get back from a torn meniscus. I’m just working right now. The offers are good. It’s another reason to keep working.

HN: What was it about your junior season that led to so many recruiters wanting you?

Shaw: I just balled out. I played in that three-man front. Ain’t nobody killed it like I did. I balled out.

HN: You’ve built up an impressive list of offers so far. Are you happy with how things are going or are there schools you’re waiting on?

Shaw: Yeah, I’m waiting on South Carolina, Oregon and LSU. I feel like they’ve been hiding from me.

HN: Are there any schools you like more than the rest right now?

Shaw: I’ve got a leader. It’s Bama. I went to their spring game and there was a great atmosphere. Packed house, fans going crazy. The players were competing. The coaches were coaching a lot. It was great up there, a lot of fun.

HN: Did you think at all about committing while you were there?

Shaw: A little bit. But there’s a lot more schools out there that I’m considering. I’m committing at the Army game and I’m going on my official visits.
