OT Damian Prince slims down, speeds up

By Mitch Sherman

ASHBURN, Va. -- At an event that featured three of the top 11 defensive prospects in the ESPN 150, third-rated offensive tackle Damian Prince of Forestville (Md.) Bishop McNamara impressed every bit as much as any of them Sunday at the Nike Football Training Camp outside of Washington, D.C.

Prince showed off a slimmed down frame -- he’s lost more than 30 pounds, he said, to reach about 285 -- and dominated in blocking drills against a stout group of defensive linemen.

Prince, No. 33 in the ESPN 150, put himself in position to rise over the upcoming months.

“I just felt as though people were doubting me," said Prince, whose scholarship offers include Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State and South Carolina. “I got real hungry and started working harder.”

For his efforts, Prince was named MVP of the offensive lineman at the NFTC and earned an invite to The Opening, set for this summer in Beaverton, Ore.

He said he shed the weight by working with the sprinters at his high school. He ran stairs, 200-meter bursts, the 400, even the 800. Whatever it took.

“Even though I’ve been running, I haven’t really left the weight room,” he said. “I’m still getting stronger. I’m stronger now than I was last season.”

Prince said he plans to select his top 10 colleges in August and announce his choice on signing day next February.

For now, he considers Florida State, Alabama, South Carolina and Ohio State as campuses he must visit.
